Getting there

Take Mt Hay Road from Leura and follow this 10km (the last 8km is on a rough dirt road, suitable for 2WD with careful driving). The Lockley Pylon car park is signposted, and is just past the Flat Top Lookout parking. The drive is a bit rough but passable when dry for a standard 2WD.  For 2wd and 4wds before heading along the road make sure your tyre pressure is appropriate and your spare is inflated.

Route/Trail notes

The trail starts relatively flat as it goes through typical low forest and heath. After 2.5km the trees finish, and are replaced by low grasses - a quite unusual landscape for the Blue Mountains.  Lockleys Pylon is now visible in the distance with the track rising gently up to the small hill. Great views from the top.

The walk is signed but there are a couple of junctions missing signage, see attached GPS or reference links for further guidance.

From Lockleys Pylon, you can continues to the Blue Gum Forest. It's a very steep track, descending 500m down Shortridge Pass in just under two kilometres. The start of the track down is marked by a cairn, just before Du Faur Head (I missed it the first time and walked too far, before backtracking 50m and seeing the small cairn – at first glance it seems as if the track just drops vertically though a gap in the rocks!).

Nice walk out and back - was exploring and looking for the Blue Gum Forest Walk down to the valley floor

Really enjoyable walk, so glad I decided to stop in on my way back from Mt Hay! The views are absolutely spectacular! Once you get to the top go a bit further and there is a nice rocky outcrop with a view of a waterfall that is well worth the extra effort. The walk is quite relaxed, just about anyone could do this.

Magnificent walk. It was great to get away from the crowds in Katoomba where I'd spent the morning. Lovely walking through the heath (would love to try it in Spring) and the views were amazing. My favourite walk I managed to fit in while in the Blue Mountains.

This is a truly spectacular walk with sweeping views of the Blue Mountains. Walking along the ridge gives you a real sense of 'wilderness'. Highly recommended.
