A very worthwhile walk to get to that famous view! It's tough on the knees & quite relentless, but the outlook makes it all worthwhile. The lookout is where most hikers stop, but the actual peak is a further 40 minutes - 1 hour further on.
It's easy to get to the start of the track - only 8 minutes' drive from Wanaka. The carpark is located on the side of the highway - be warned, it fills up quickly.
The walk is on a wide, reasonably well-maintained trail on private land. You'll be met by lots of livestock & plenty of others who have travelled far & wide to see the view! It's relentlessly steep & exposed with lots of switchbacks. You can do the trail in runners, but it does get dusty / muddy in Summer & covered in ice / snow in Winter. There is a toilet at the base & at the lookout.
A donation is requested to keep the track maintained. Also, the track is closed over certain dates between October & November every year for lambing. Check doc.govt.nz for updates & track conditions.
