Mt. Rysy, Tartra National Park.

Poland

Mt. Rysy is the tallest mountain in Poland. The hike takes you across some stunning alpine area and some amazing alpine lakes near the border of Slovakia. Be warned that this a very long hike that is gruelling and demanding. It requires some scrambling near the top that is not for the faint-hearted. But the views are wroth the effort and none of the scrambling is particularly complex. There are chains to guide you.

This hike can also be done from the Slovakian side which apparently easier.

Getting there

Is it possible to drive to Tatra National Park or take the bus. If taking public transport, it is recommended to stay in Zakopane the night before as you want to get on the earliest bus that you possibly can, you are in for a big day of hiking and don't want to be caught out in the dark.

If taking the bus, walk down to Zakopane station and look for the bus stop. There should be signs for a bus heading towards Morskie Oko. You want this bus. You should be able to buy a ticket on board from the driver when leaving the bus. Get off at the last stop and this is where the trail begins.

Route/Trail notes

The first hour or so of this hike is quite boring. You have to walk along a concrete path for what seems like eternity. There are very few, if any views along this road. If you want to skip this torture, there is a horse and cart available. Like an old taxi, pay the man money and he will take you to lake Morskie Oko where the real hike begins. The path to Morksie Oko is obvious and should be fine.

Once you reach Morskie Oko, go down to the lake and you should see a sign pointing you towards Mt. Rysy. Walk around the lake and then you'll start hiking upwards towards a second lake. Once reaching the second lake, the hike will start to become more difficult with a greater incline.

After hiking for a while, you will reach a section with chains. Nothing here is technically difficult. There are children doing it, so it isn't too bad. Just be careful and keep hold of the chains and you should be able to make the acsent. Keep a look out for pink arrow markers which guide the way up the rock. Straying from the path can be fatal.

The peak is very small and crowded. Don't be surprised if you have nowhere to sit. If you feeling cheeky, you can make a dip over the Slovakian border and climb one of the other peaks of Mt. Rysy which are over 2,500 metres.

Follow same path back to Zakopane or hike over the border into Slovakia and finish at the town of Poprad. Note that Slovakian descent is easier, but I don't know anything about the path. Polish side down can be a bit hairy at time, but nothing life threatening.

Permits/Costs

To enter Tatra National Park, you require a pass which can be purchased for a small amount of money at the national park gate.
