Start this hike from Fern Tree. It’s a wonderful, damp and luminous green hike through rainforest and skirting around some of Mt Wellington to provide impressive views from Sphinx Lookout. On the way back, take a look at The Octopus Tree!
Start this hike (and many other walks) from Fern Tree. Park the car in the Carpark and start from the steps in this area. You'll walk immediately into a beautiful rainforest.
Which maps cover the area?
Walk up the Fern Glade Track then onto Radford's Track, walk through The Springs then onto the Lenah Valley Track.
The Sphinx Lookout is on your right about a km or so along Lenah Valley Track. Return to this track after the lookout and head to Lower Sawmill Track then turn right onto Shoobridge Track. A short distance along here will be The Octopus Tree. Continue on the Shoebridge Track then veer onto the North South Track which will lead you back to The Springs.
There's a few different ways to get back to Fern Tree from here...try the Radford's Track, Reid's Track, Silver Falls Track (then a stop at the falls) before continuing back to Fern Tree via The Pipeline Track.
Parks pass only.
