This hill first served as the Harbour Master’s signal point for shipping. Local militia units established the gun batteries and built the concrete fortifications that were completed in 1887. The bluestone powder magazine was built in 1860 to store explosives used in the construction of the river wall.
In Port Fairy, take Gipps Road north and across the Moyne River Bridge. Turn immediately right down Griffiths Street to Battery Lane where there is a car park.
None found.
From the car park climb to the top of Battery Hill to view the surrounding area and the ancient cannons. Continue along the top of the hill on the pathway to the old Powder Magazine before dropping down to the start of the breakwall.
Walk out along the breakwall and back before walking along the beach back to the car park.
None.
Port Fairy is fortunate to have such a rare battery collection of cannons with their metal and wooden carriages and emplacements on Battery Hill. In January, each year the cannon on the top of Battery Hill is fired every Sunday morning to celebrate the New Year.
