Just outside of Kyoto city lies the sleepy town of Kurama, home of the Tengu. Via Mount Kurama and Kurama-dera walk to Kibune which is another sleepy town full of culture.
Take the Eizan Line to Kurama station and from there walk to the big statue of the Tengu (the one with the big nose). This is the where the hike begins. From there follow the signs that say 貴船 (Kibune) [note: that signs are only written in Japanese] and you will eventually reach Kibune.
Google maps
The walk is relatively easy as there is a paved path for most of the way. However, in the winter particularly if it has snowed and the snow has begun to melt, it can make the track muddy and slippery for parts where the path isn't paved
The first section of the hike which is the only part with any real steepness can be avoided by taking the chairlift if you are so inclined. Although it is not that that bad and isn't necessary whatsoever.
You will have to pay a 300 yen entry fee into the temple (about $3.50).
