Lake Matheson, nestled in ancient Forests, is famous for its stunning mirror reflections of Mt Cook and Mt Tasman, which are the result of leaf matter leaching into the water and turning it a dark brown colour.
From the township of Fox Glacier, take Cook Flat Road west towards Gillespie's Beach. After 4km, turn right into Lake Matheson Road down to the car park.
From the car park, the signposted track passes the cafe and souvenir shop and head out towards the lake. You then cross a suspension bridge and before long, the track forks. Take the left hand track that winds through the ancient forest until you reach the Jetty and its lookout and information board.
Return by the same route.
None.
For those with time on their hands, you can continue on around the lake on the loop track.
As with most South Island towns, there are always numerous tracks in and around the area. In this case most notably Fox Glacier Valley Walk and Mount Fox Track.
