Mt. Beerwah - Alpine Route

Glass House Mountains National Park

Steep and tricky scramble followed by a nasty scrub bash section, climbing the North West side to join the upper tourist track. Basic rock climbing skills are needed to ascend the first 100m. Rope and some trad gear would be advisable on the lower section to lead a group.

A route of a strong wild environment and adventure character not to be taken lightly by inexperienced route finders.

Getting there

From Beerwah carpark walk to the picnic area and follow the hiking summit track to the base of the slab.

From here walk right, following the rock apron past the following climbing landmarks: Mosquito wall (bolted), Thanksgiving wall and Mr. Busy Pillar (Bolted). The route starts 50m right of Mr. Busy Pillar (S26 53.768 E152 52.870) and could possibly be the easiest way to the summit from the west side.

Route/Trail notes

110m (3 pitches of soft rock grade 6 to 10 if you prefer to rope up) easy ascending traverse starting through the chimney of a leaning pillar, up and to the right, easily protectable leading south to a final belay at S26,89742, E152,88223 (all three belays on convenient gear if you need). Pack ropes and gear and begin a nasty steep bush-bash along the base of the lower shoulder (to east) on mank until flat clean rocks are reached (the bivouac S26,89745, E152,88183). From here head up to the summit on easier terrain following the northern base of the lower peak (the knob) and following a faint path through eden bush until you join with the upper hiking route. From here you can reach the summit in 5 min. Total time: 3 hr Descent via Hiking route (45 min to carpark).

A great alternative to the tourist track. I made a 5-min movie with drone footage and maps here: https://youtu.be/hoUJziInoNY

First time on North west Beerwah! by far my favourite route up.
Go with a group on your first time as this route is no joke.

Exploring the mountain

Have done this ground up, not without few scratches. Fun trying to get over the steep first tier, then wishing the clean steep rock didn't end. The second part is painful until you get over easier terrain and is all over but overall a scenic route especially higher up. Alternatively you could reach the top of the shoulder and follow the exposed ridge westerly over the knob to join the tourist track for a more exciting finish. Recommended only to the experienced.
