Getting there:

From Monto, head north on the Burnett Highway and after 11.5km turn right into Cania Road (signposted Cania Gorge). Follow this for 13.7km and park by the picnic area and information board on the right, about 1km beyond the Cania Gorge Tourist Retreat.

Maps:

Cania Gorge .

Route/Trail notes:

From the car park, head out along the signposted track and across Three Moon Creek. After 450m, take the right fork, which leads upwards along the cliff face. Towards the top, a signposted track to the left takes you to Dragon Cave where a naturally formed black dragon like mural can be seen highlighted against the white sandstone wall.

Return to the main track and turn left up to Bloodwood Cave, so named as the roots of a bloodwood tree go through the cave. From here, there is a steep stepped 70m section that takes you to the Gorge Lookout. Return by the same route.

Permits/Costs:

None.

Other References/Comments:

Many people combine this walk with Dripping Rock and The Overhang, by taking a right when you get back to the fork.

Basing yourself at Cania Gorge Tourist Retreat for a few days, is a great way to provide easy access to these walks.

Comments

Recently moved to the Monto area so exploring all the local attractions. Nice walk, taking in the natural flora and fauna with openings in the trees at points overlooking the gorge, which make for a great photo. The path has stepped sections but has rocks under foot so watch where your walking. I stumbled a few times.
Great views out at the look out point, take lots of water, hats. You know the drill.
Nice bbq and covered seating areas at the car park to relax after your walk

Worth the walk. Was a good view over the valley! Run out of time to continue on to Bloodwood Cave.

The area was desperately in need of rain but still had lots of interesting plants, birds and animals to watch out for.
I really enjoyed this area.

Having just walked Dripping Rock and The Overhang, this was a obvious detour before returning to the car park. Took a while to work out the Dragon as the weather worn back of the cave looked like dragon scales!
