Route/Trail notes

This is an easy 6km walk exploring the tip of the South Arm Peninsula. Taking you along the coastline, you will have constant views of the Derwent estuary: Hobart, the Tasman Bridge and Bruny Island.

You'll head off from the gate at Spitfarm Road. The track can be done clockwise or counterclockwise. If you choose counterclockwise, the track toward the right will take you firstly down to Shelly Beach - it won't be hard to see why they call it that! Continue on this track to Gellibrand Point, which is at the northern tip. During this section you will pass the Split, an outcrop home to a number of breeding birds.

You'll return along the western coast, where you'll be treated to views of Kingston and Bruny Island. Gellibrand Vault, the burial site of original South Arm grantee William Gellibrand is located just after commencing your return journey & there is information here to read more about the vault & its occupants. Next, you'll pass Mary Ann Bay, which is the best beach of the walk. You can take a small detour here. Enjoy the beautiful meander back to the trailhead at Spitfarm Road!
