Mt Warning Summit Trail

MOUNT WARNING SUMMIT TRAIL IS NOW PERMANENTLY CLOSED.

A trail to the summit of Mt Warning offers beautiful 360 degree views of the Great Dividing Range from the peak. Lots of steps, can be slippery. A steep climb to the summit using chains, but the views from the top are worth it!

The chain scramble...oh my. At top for sunrise and on the clearest possible day. Magic. Tough girl a beginner back then. Annoyed at others walking with music playing through speakers as I love the sounds of nature as I walk.

Finally did the sunrise summit - I left way too early, got to the summit at 4am, and froze for the next two hours until the sun came up. It's terrifying to do the climb on your own, that early in the morning when there is zero light except the narrow beam from my head torch. It was eerily quiet and still, but somehow beautiful. The sunrise was worth every effort. It brought tears to my eyes, it's like nothing I have ever seen before. Highly reccommend the sunrise summit, but do it with other people.

This one was on my Bucket List and has been ever since the cartoon movie "Ferngully - The Last Rainforest" came out in 1992.
I took my boys camping over the school holidays with this climb in mind. I knew it would be hard and cold, but was determined to make it - which we did!!!
That last 400 meters is a killer but well worth it when you reach the top.
What and achievement.

Fairly busy on the trail, 1:33 up, 0:55 down. Was a white out up the top, but got to the scrambling before it started to rain. Lots of people still heading up after me and it would have been fairly wet and slippery up top.

Will do this again when its a clear day.

Did this walk with Lincoln 4 and Eloise 6 who walked every step of the way up and every step of the way down. Their favourite part was the chains up the top section. We left at 7 am and got back at 2.40 pm. 3 hrs 20 mins up. 1 hour at the top. Funnily it took exactly 3 hrs 20 mins to come down. 7 hrs 40 mins all told. Kids full of beans at the end running around playing chase after they paddled their feet in the creek. Would recommend this walk to all families.

Beautiful walk up the summit trail. Was a bit of rain the night before hand and the trail was very slippery, due to the amount of traffic this trail attracts causing it to get quite muddy. Never the less was still enjoyable.

Did it with one other mate, we wanted to see sunset. Was a cloudy day, we started at 3pm, realised we were good for time and sat and ate a sandwich on the way up waiting for the clouds to disperse, and reached the summit at 4:30. Hung around until 5:45 and descended in the dark. We were prepared and had headlamps so it was smooth sailing. Reached the car park at 6:50. Time estimates seem to be pretty large, but we are young and reasonably fit.

Did this walk twice; once starting very early to see the sunrise, and a couple of years later with my 8-year old son during the day. Nice views from the top, albeit nothing particularly amazing. The last scramble up the rocks using a chain is fun.

Hubby and I did the climb with our friends, Easter long weekend mid morning.

Hiked for sunrise, expected it to be busy but it was way worse than expected, so many people! Unfortunately a lot of the crowd seemed to be backpackers who were quite disrespectful of the park (this included walking off trails, camping, drinking and leaving human waste on the lookout!)

That said, a bit about the experience: arrived at the base of mountain at 3:30am AEST (we came from QLD, so 4:30 AEDT) and the car park was already full, 20+ cars. We hiked to the summit by 5AM AEST (1h30m) but at a pretty fast pace. I imagine longer if you prefer a slower pace or intermediate fitness level. We used head torches to guide our way, it's extremely dark predawn, we saw people use iPhones for lights but I wouldn't recommend it. I wore my hiking boots but my partner just wore some ASICS runners, just be careful where you step or you'll roll an ankle. Once at the top, first light came at 5:30 AEST and sunrise at 5:50. The top is just a small platform facing east, that on my visit was crowded with 40-50 people. If you're a photographer looking for a good sunrise shot, forget it during any peak periods.

Though something to tick off the list, I probably wouldn't recommend it. There are better mountain experiences in the Glasshouse Mountains and the Scenic Rim if climbing is what you're after, and better views of sunrise elsewhere. Also, if you're after Gondwana Rainforests, nicer examples can be found in national parks to the north or south. This should really only be if you want to see the "first sunrise". I'm surprised the park isn't better monitored, because it really had just turned into a mess with the backpackers leaving rubbish and others taking there dogs etc. Not a wilderness experience at all but something you can say you've done I guess!

Great walk, the track is very rocky and you are constantly having to gauge your step. The views are spectacular. The many steps at the beginning and end when coming back down are the worst part. Bring lots of water and good hiking shoes. If you sweat a lot like me bring a change of clothes, I was so wet it was like I jumped in the river. if you go early in the morning and are wanting to spend some time up the top bring a jumper as it is quite cold especially when you are wet with sweat. I didn't do it but I have heard the sunrise is the wonderful from the top. You will have to leave the base around 2-3am to get to the top in time depending on how fast you can go in the dark. Bring head lamp or torch.

This was the 3rd time I went to Mt Warning. Great views at the top and not hard to hike. Definitely easier than Mt Greville & Maroon.
Plenty of stairs to walk down so walking pole is handy.

Loved it and cant wait to do it again.
Did this on my own and as much I was a little overwhelmed at parts, it is totally do-able if you're careful.
There had been run so was quite muddy in sections but pushed through. Not much of a view that morning as it was mostly fog but spectacular views on the way back down.
Got a few glimpses of snakes also getting their daily dose of Vitamin D on the way back down.

Great walk! My first time, but not last.

AgaDeblaise on 17 Feb, 2016

Worth doing for sunrise.

alxhoff on 11 Feb, 2016

First big serious hike for me personally. Was a great way to break into such a fun activity. Loved the rock face to climb towards the summit, that made my eyes light up and was awesome. Our view was a white out, but I will happily do this hike again in future.

I loved this track .. Thou I had to walk 6km up the mountain road first before I even got to the track as a huge tree had fallen on the road so had to leave the car down the very bottom of entry road that winds up to track car park ! It was my first mountain hike and I got hooked after this!

Was a great climb before I realised its cultural significance. Now I would feel uneasy climbing it.

Chantelle on 24 Jan, 2016

Started at 3am-ish, got to the top just on sunrise. Good walk. Have done this twice now and would like to go again. Inclined walking & steps all of the way. Plenty of spots to stop for a rest. Markers half way, decent views from that point. Last 50m (approx) is a rock climb. Very easy to manoeuvre upwards. Places to put your feet/hands and a chain to help you up. Going down hurt my knees as there are quite a lot of steps! Take water & a healthy snack for the top

Awesome walk, I took my wife (she had never done it before) so it was a bit slower, but never the less still an amazing walk. My wife struggled with the last part (rock climb) but it was so good to see her overcome her fears and push through.
