Mt Warning Summit Trail

Wollumbin National Park

MOUNT WARNING SUMMIT TRAIL IS NOW PERMANENTLY CLOSED.

A trail to the summit of Mt Warning offers beautiful 360 degree views of the Great Dividing Range from the peak. Lots of steps, can be slippery. A steep climb to the summit using chains, but the views from the top are worth it!

Very social experience. Seldom without clouds at the top.

If you want to be like everyone else in the world, and hike this on New Years Eve for sunrise, you will only encounter hoards upon hoards of folk - - evidence as to why this mountain is deteriorating. Some hikes are just too popular. Any bush walker would know that you'll see the best, healthiest bush on less frequented trails.

In my opinion, the hike is made easy by the chain so don't expect a major challenge.

Good walk ruined by people who seem to think national parks are gyms.

Views are speechless! Up early to hike and see sunrise! Extremely worthwhile! Happily do it again!

Nice to watch the sunrise. Busy at the top but worth the views. Started climbing at 3am and got to the summit 1hour 38minutes

Popular walk. The summit does get a bit crowded, particularly at sunrise. The best part was the rock scramble with a chain guide. Bit dangerous but any sensible kid 12 or up could do it.

Great sunrise walk, but shared with too many!

When it says showery conditions, take it as being wet on 'cloud catcher' Wollumbin.
I've climbed this several times in my teenage and early 20s - in the humid heat of Boxing Day with the cicadas noise pulsing in my brain and the more comfortable short cool days of winter, but never in the wet until this time.
Mr 19 with long legs and youth did it in 3 hours, Miss 13 found it memorable for the 5 hours of climbing triggered her CRMO to be debilitating enough in the following 2-3 weeks to get an MRI and eventual diagnosis, while I persevered on my 40-something year old legs and was back in a warm car with the kids after 6.5 hours.
I cannot believe I was back within a month to do it all again on a sunnier day!

Nice walk through bushland, but it's all about the climb up the rocks near the summit. Fairly tired by the time we finished but if you have a decent level of fitness you'll manage it no problem.

Unrelenting up for 2 hours,.... then unrelenting down for 2 hours.
A great view from the top but not one of my favourite walks. One of those walks that I've ticked off the list rather than enjoyed.

Sunrise hike . Lots of people too! Very popular indeed.
2.5 hours to the top then wait for sunrise.

Stoked to have made it - a good walk that gets the heart going. Took about 2 hours to reach the summit and I like to think we are reasonably fit people. The 360 degree view from the top is pretty awesome,

The top of the mountain is a disappointment though. Overrun by backpackers/hippies crowded in for a view of the sunrise. There were Americans yelling and yahooing the whole way up, and at the top there were a stack of smelly Byron Bay/Nimbin hippies carrying on as well. There was really no need for loud behaviour at 6am! Two stupid people also brought dogs up as well...which is not only banned in National Parks, but it's also animal cruelty when you see the final 400m of the climb - its vertical!

I won't be doing the climb again, otherwise I'll be sure to throw an obnoxious American backpacker or dreadlocked hippy off the mountain.good to tick this off the bucket list though.

Great walk, great cardio. Loved the scramble at the end. Too many people on a weekend though

At 1,156m this is the highest peak we have climbed so far. However, the car park is already at 456m so you climb 700m. The track is 4.4km each way and you really do have to heed the signs about not setting out after 1pm in winter. The track is well defined, but darkness is a lot lot earlier than sunset, given the canopy cover and tripping or slipping is your biggest enemy here.
Three generations of F.A.B. (aged 6, 8, 31 and 60+) climbed M.T. today. We took our time, travelling at the pace of the slowest (not necessarily the oldest!), with a few natural breaks to enjoy the views and energize the children. It took us 2.5hrs each way, with a rest for lunch of about half an hour at the top. Having rained pretty heavily over the previous week, the track was in good condition. This was winter time and probably the best time to climb as the ‘traffic’ was less and the temperatures lower. Even so, there were about 100 on the mountain at the time.
The last 0.4km to the top is the toughest, as you have to use the chains to help pull yourself up, but coming down the chains backwards, like abseiling, was much easier. This can be a busy section as up and down has to take it in turns in some sections. This was the highest and best climb we have done so far and the kids were brilliant. It's a fantastic, but long day out, for all families and would recommend it!

We started from the car park nearly before noon. And finished when it was quite dark 5:30ish. Was exhausted but relieved that we have done it! Plus the vertical climb with chains is so fun, the view on the summit is such rewarding. Definitely will do this again! maybe a sunrise trip

Done today great climb.

Amazing! Views were breathtaking.

Kasia on 1 Jul, 2015

Went with friends. Leading a sedentary lifestyle and with no training I found it a tough walk. Was really exhausted halfway up the mountain but didn't want to come back and do it again! The chain section at the top felt like it was going on forever. Glad I made it to the top. Fantastic feeling of achievement. Great views. Going downhill was easy but it is slippery at some parts (after rains the previous day). Unlikely to torture myself again on this mountain. 2.5h up 1.5h down.
