Light Line Rd Kholo to Mermaid Mountain

Getting there

I turned right off Lake Manchester Rd and drove about 500 metres along Light Line Rd, opened a gate and drove through (closed it again!) drove to the yellow & green Locked Council gate and parked my car.

Route/Trail notes

From where the car is parked on Light Line Road you walk about 500m and turn right onto Mermaid Mt Break. It gets pretty steep after 2km and requires patience and careful footing. The trip down is far more difficult than the trip up. I used hiking poles, some people can get down on their bums and hand to descend. Once you get to the top you turn left and walk along the rydge for about 500m to you get to the big rock. Scramble up the rock and there you are! It’s not overly hard, but its not an easy walk. Just loved the view so much. I made myself a coffee and sat and took in the serenity and fresh air. I saw an Eagle, Black Cockatoo, Goanna, plenty of other birds too.

Combined this with Little Mermaid Lookout loop - all up 12.3km and 3.5 hours with a couple of 10 min breaks. Quite steep on the way down the eastern loop side.

Came from Lake Manchester Rd access and went anticlockwise around the loop up to the lookout and back. Up up up! Quite a few challenging steep hills to go up and come back down. A bit of scree, could get interesting in wet or dry weather. Having said that, view was definitely worth it! Beautiful lookout over the undulating hills and to Lake Manchester reservoir. Recommend walking poles and lots of water.

Followed the directions. There is only parking for one, maybe two cars.
Somewhat easy to navigate. The trail does become quite loose with dirt and gravel, so hiking poles and Stout shoes would be recommended.
The only thing I would add is that when searching for "the big rock", you meet a 3 prong intersection. The rock is a hair pin to the left if you follow the directions on this page. We made it to the top by late morning and were completely swamped by horse flies which shortened our stay. Beautiful view though
