Getting there

The track leaves from the end of Cotswold Rd which turns South of Boonah-Rathdowney Rd 2.7km East of Maroon township. The track ends at a small dam about 3.5km from the turnoff.

Maps

The Maroon 1:25000 covers the area.

Route/Trail notes

Follow the open hill just south-west of the dam. A reasonably clear track leads up the hill reasonably quickly (I wouldn't say it's steep, but if you've been doing graded tracks it'll get the heart pumping... ok, it's fairly steep!).

This track leads into a gully with some spectacular cliffs off to the right. If you're into rock climbing this cliff offers some good options. Just search for Ruby of India to get started.

Climb up the gully, taking care not to dislodge rocks down on your fellow hikers. At the top of the gully a track leads through a small area of vegetation before emerging at the base of the main, bald peak. Simply wind your way up this peak to the large cairn at the top and enjoy the views.

There are some trail markers along the way - orange triangles - but you should have reasonable navigation skills to attempt this one.

My first time up Mt Maroon yesterday morning. Glorious day after the storm that passed through the night before. Track was dry and with only a few puddles at the summit. A slight breeze and what a great stop for a cuppa. Views of Brisbane CBD it was that clear. I was a bit nervous coming down but was easier than expected. Sliding on my butt seemed the go! Parks have put a couple of tags to keep you headed in the right direction but still I relied on my Garmin 925 to keep me on track. A few footpads near the top that can get you off track. Sore today as I'm not used to those scrambling sections. Drank 1ltr water (out of 2ltr bladder), 2 hiking poles (i would only take 1 next time), wore Salomon trail shoes. Time to summit 1hr 33min. Spent and hour at top for rest, coffee and snacks. Just over 1 hr return. Will take in the other peak next time. youtube https://youtu.be/alk8_nzkjMM

Early morning hike to summit at 6am with my two older boys (8 & 10). Beautiful views. On the way down about 9-10am saw hundreds of people headed up - it’s a shame it seems this mountain has become too popular 😕

Challenging walk. Loved the rock climbing aspect. You get to use a lot of your upper body.

Great quick walk, finished going one way up in 1hr 15 (going pretty hard) for a sunrise hike. Amazing views.

Awesome hike! Absolutely loved it!!

Just be careful once you get passed the first steep walk. There’s an orange marked that’s pointing up towards the fake summit and it kind of looks like the tracks going up over the rocks. Got down and round to the right and follow the little track through there. You might come passed another little orange marker pointing up towards the fake summit again, ignore it and keep following the track round til you reach a sign about falling rocks. From there it’s pretty straight forward.

When you get to a little clearing, Forrest type area go towards the right and you’ll see a marker showing you the track. There’s some trees down over the path from the storm but you can easily go around them and keep tracking up towards the summit.

Such a good climb! Would recommend!!

Really fun and beautiful hike. After doing Beerwah and Tibro a few months back, this felt like a walk in the park in terms of technical difficulty. As some have mentioned, requires some navigational ability, but the track is fairly obvious in most parts.
Took roughly 1hr10mins on ascent, and spend a fair bit of time alone on the summit. Stunning 360degree views. Spent another 2-3hours exploring the top and hiking up the false summit (the rock feature so prominent when doing the first section).
Really stunning scenery and enjoyable hike. Will be back for sunrise or sunset in the near future.

Easy to find. A difficult climb with rock scrambling. I was the only one trekking early hours of the morning. The track was dusty, parts were not well defined, I got lost but found my way. The views were spectacular!

I’ve been wanting to climb Mt Maroon for a while, and today was forecast to be perfect so a plan was made. I arrived at the car parking area at about 9am – and there were already quite a lot of people here. I started up the dusty trail. Clouds of dust formed every time my boot went down. They need rain out here so badly. Even the prickly pears are withered!

I started climbing the spur and clambering over the rocks. The dust did make navigation easy though, I don’t think there’s any way of losing the trail up here at the moment, and if you did for some reason you would find it again as long as you stick to the top of the spur. Then a quick change of scene – one minute you’re walking the ridge, next thing you’re climbing in the bottom of a valley. This part wasn’t as bad as I was expecting, I just took it slow – and ignored the sign that tells you not to linger in this zone. I rested when I needed it.

Made it to the summit and admired the views. Barney is amazing, but the view towards Rathdowney and Running Creek Valley were so nice, even though the ground was brown. Lake Maroon on the other side looked inviting.

Time to climb down. I was a bit worried about the descent. I don’t descend well. I often get sore knees and am far from nimble. I’m a climber, not a descender. I was surprised - I climbed down the valley and was surprised how quickly it took. But then the trek down the spur… one of my knees was getting a bit sore, and I felt like I was trekking down through the dust forever. Down and Down. But eventually I was back at the carpark. 3 hours up and 2.5 hours down.

We conquered Mt Maroon rock scramble/ climb. Elevation 966mts. 6km return. Mainly rock scrambling/ climbing to the summit. I'd class it grade 5: hard. As there is no clear hiking track. We just followed previous comments of the yellow triangle markers and previous hiker foot prints. There were few signs, letter markings and worn out orange paint to help navigate the route.
We followed the open hill track just past the dam and through a gate. Then up a clear dirt track that leads up a steep hill.

The track leads to a steep rocky hill climb and then a steep boulder scramble. This took us about an hour to reach the plateau where we veered right to start the steep descent into the gully. This offered some spectacular views of the cliffs and surroundings.
We came to the bottom of the gorge where we saw a danger sign indicating the no stopping/ lingering zone. We then turned towards the left and started the steep rock climb up the gully. From here it took us about 20 mins to reach the saddle or camping zone.

We turned right and followed the track leading through a small area of vegetation before emerging at the base of the main, bald peak. With some more rock scrambling/climbing up the bald peak. We navigated it by the worn orange paint markings and yellow arrows on rocks. We made our way up to the peak to the large cairn at the top and enjoy the 360 degree views. Taking approx 2.5 hours.

What an amazing place at the top. We were the only ones up there and enjoyed a yummy packed lunch. It took approximately 2hrs back down. Navigating by white spray paint markings and previous memory of the journey.

Another great visit to the summit

We did this walk on a beautiful clear day with great 360 views of Lake Maroon. Mount Barney, Mt Lindsey and even Mt Warning way in the distance. To find the start of the walk you don't go right to the end of Cotswold Rd. but stop at the first car parking area near a little dam. From here you head off to the right and you'll see the track. At first the track is well defined but at a rocky section there is a right turn. Later there is an obvious left turn which takes you up the gorge. Overall it's a physically challenging climb but no special rock climbing skills are required. If you're young and reasonably fit this track shouldn't be a problem. We got up in under 2 hours and down in one and a half hours.
