Getting there

The track leaves from the end of Cotswold Rd which turns South of Boonah-Rathdowney Rd 2.7km East of Maroon township. The track ends at a small dam about 3.5km from the turnoff.

Maps

The Maroon 1:25000 covers the area.

Route/Trail notes

Follow the open hill just south-west of the dam. A reasonably clear track leads up the hill reasonably quickly (I wouldn't say it's steep, but if you've been doing graded tracks it'll get the heart pumping... ok, it's fairly steep!).

This track leads into a gully with some spectacular cliffs off to the right. If you're into rock climbing this cliff offers some good options. Just search for Ruby of India to get started.

Climb up the gully, taking care not to dislodge rocks down on your fellow hikers. At the top of the gully a track leads through a small area of vegetation before emerging at the base of the main, bald peak. Simply wind your way up this peak to the large cairn at the top and enjoy the views.

There are some trail markers along the way - orange triangles - but you should have reasonable navigation skills to attempt this one.

Reasonable walk, not too long. Good for the family, we took along our 6 year old grandson and he did very well. Great views at the top, definitely worth it. I wouldn't mind to return one day.

Great track. You can get a bit lost momentarily as there are some false trails but you should soon realise this. Getting very popular. Some very unprepared people up there. Very cold at the top and it was windy. Care needs to be taken in the chimney climb and you will feel it in your legs. It was my first time up there and I liked it better overall than Barney- particularly as you get to look at how great Barney is! Doesn’t take nearly as long either. Views are the best in the whole area.

An old favourite. 4hr round trip. Hard to get away from the top with the fantastic views. Great workout and will test the ticker.

Got lost, a lot, so many different ways to get to the peak, the path constantly splits and was never really sure which way was the 'right way' to go. But, it was awesome! Climbing up the chimney section was amazing, highly recommend a good pair of shoes.

After falling in love with Mt Maroon my 1st climb, it was necessary to come back again, this time we tried for sunrise. The weather forecast just before we left Gold Coast had said it would be sunny, by the time we got there it was surrounded in cloud. In hope the clouds were briefly visiting, we begun walking up. We lost the track a couple of times heading across, towards the base of the gorge, in the dark, so many (possible) tracks become visable. However, remembering a few landmarks/rocks from the previous climb, helped get us back on track. Going up the gorge, it began to rain a bit. We continued slowly and cautiously. When reaching the summit, still cloaked in cloud and mist, we noticed someone had knocked down the cairn that was stacked last time. After a while up top the clouds began to clear, sun glowed and some of the amazing views below were being revealed.
I really enjoy Mt Maroon, 1st section up is great for the lungs and legs, gorge is a fun climb, up top there is so much to explore and the views of scenic rim, Mt Barney, Mt Lindsay etc are breathtaking.

Great walk. Lots of scrambling. A few more markers would be nice, but if you stick to the ridge for the first part you should be ok.
It's a shame that someone destroyed the man made cairn at the top.

This one has become one of my favourites. Did it with my 6 year old and it’s his new favourite too. Strava showed almost 8km and took 4hours 30 return with a stop at the top for lunch. This hike is pretty unique. Got a little off the main track a few times but it all seems to connect back up. There are orange markers when you start getting closer to the top. Just stop and have a look around before you commit to a track and you will be fine.

Awesome walk with spectacular views from the top. However good footwear and care is needed as the track is fairly rough.

1st time up and it has easily become one of my favorites. The 1st section up a bit of a challenge for lungs and legs, the 2nd part trying to navigate through big boulders close to the cliffs edge, the gorge climb up, initially daunting yet in the zone was fun and the views just keep getting better. Once up the top section, I can see how it's easy to lose your path as there are a few tracks. We explored. Navigated to the middle summit then the highest summit where the cairn is. Views are divine! Need to return to explore the other summit soon.

Awsome hike. 3rd time I've done this first time for dawn. Headlamps were adequate. Physically challengeing easy to navigate it is like a mini Mt Barney. Great views from the top and cliff views on the way up

A steep hike out of the car park and this flows into lots of rocks after about 1km.
The path is easy enough to follow and there are markers just in case.
Path goes down, which is upsetting as it means it needs to rise again to summit ;(
At the bottom take a quick break as its a decent climb up from here.
You can check out the 1st summit and great views from here (go to the left at the top of the climb).
Now you can choose to go up or end the walk here depending on fitness levels.
I wouldn't recommend for kids but we did see young and old alike on this walk and all were OK

Had to do this again. As hard as it was I enjoyed the feeling of still being able to do it. Had great views from the top this time but was windy and cold.

A good trek that I had to take slow and steady; approximately 3.5 hrs. Would be good if there were a few more orange triangles along the trek to stop inexperienced like me from getting lost on the way back down.

Great hike and spectacular views 360 degrees. Beautiful!

Aggy on 1 Feb, 2019

A easy enough track to follow most of way up. quite steep and constant most of way which could be challenging if you were not quite fit. Past a group early into incline one girl had tapped out due to toughness and group was sucking in the big ones and having a rest. I went up and back with 10 min breather at top in just over 2 hrs. Was at full pace and did run as much as I could. Spectacular views and a must do.

Why in heavens name do you people have to spoil the natural beauty of this country by building these stupid cairns. Cairn are supposedly build to mark a trail, not to leave a damned eyesore to let other people know that you have been there. STOP BUILDING CAIRNS. I hope you people know it is illegal in Australia unless it it to mark a point where the trail has disappeared and you need to show your way back. Even then you should carry a compass and a map to show yourself where you are supposed to be walking. Leave the natural beauty for everyone to see not your stupid cairns that have no purpose other then yourself gratification

This is a great hike - nice steady climb and some scrambling. The 360 degree view from the summit is beautiful and the breeze is welcome. We completed the hike in 3 hours and 15 minutes, including a 20 minute break at the summit.

Hannah on 25 Nov, 2018

Path was easy to follow on the way to the summit. We did a loop around the far ridge and cut back across the saddle (though this required much scrambling and there was no clear path). Awesome hike, will be back.

5/5 stars, 5.5hrs return at slow pace. After leaving the small carpark, a short 5-10 minute walk will transition into mostly uphill, so prep your quads. This continues on for about an hour, or maybe about an hour and a half if you’re going at a relaxed pace. Steep enough to make it feel like good exercise, but with the trees being relatively spread out, there is usually a good breeze blowing to cool you down (dense enough to provide decent shade, but spread out enough that you can see the hills in the distance down below. The trail is also relatively clear (small arrows hammered into the rocks every now and then), and a good mixture of dirt and rock set into the ground, so you can have a balance between walking on the rocks to rely for balance, but also softer dirt ground to ease the legs a little. After continuing upwards for a while, the track will loop back down for maybe 50m and around some rock, so try to stick to the track and not rely on scrambling over the large rocks. A short scramble section follows, going mostly upwards. Afterwards, if you continue on along the trail for another half hour, you’ll peak. The summit is fairly large, with several small slight elevations along the rocky plain that could each be called a ‘peak’. Could easily explore the peak and take photos of each view for an hour (going around the edges of the summit will give the 360 degree views of the land). Nearby mountains, a lake, and small hills make for a great landscape. Would definitely recommend if you have decent physical ability. I've done this hike 1 time.
