Mount Coolum

Sunshine Coast

Enjoy a steep trek to the summit of one of the Sunshine Coast’s ancient volcanic domes. Created about 26 million years ago, Mount Coolum is a laccolith, formed when a dome-shaped bulge of magma cooled below the Earth’s surface.
Spectacular coastal views, rare and threatened plants, wildflowers, bird life and geology feature here.

Even though the sign said a 2hr return, it only takes about 20-30mins to reach the top, depending on your fitness. The views are beautiful. The track itself is made in such a way that it blends in well with the environment. Would definitely recommend for anyone who has a spare hour or two around Coolum.

A local mountain, basically 'in town'. It is known to locals as "Jehovah's Holy Mountain'; apparently as it sits atop the local congregation and resembles some other mountain in the Jerusalem area. (the latter not verified) Anyhow it seems to be always very busy and the car park full to overflowing at almost every hour.
At the top there is little shade--and all the tourists hogging that, so take--as you always should, ensure sunscreen and water. ( Locals are more inclined to be trying to do the walk quicker so have long since got past stopping to smell the roses--or enjoy the views.)
It is rare that you do not see people of all ages and ethnicity and so, yes, little children and us Oldies (Pensioners).
A continuous stream of people use this as cardiovascular fitness exercise training so be prepared to keep 'giving way'. At the base car park camp there is a juice and coffee van. You will not see this on any other mountain-so if you like your caffein hit--go for it. (Do note dear fellow geriatrics--- get your fix after the walk as no toilets on these mountains)
This particular mountain has become so popular that steps have been considerately places all the way with many rest areas to enjoy the scenic spectacular coastal views. One can even see planes arriving and leaving at the Sunshine Coast airport at Marcoola (Mudjimba.)
Having now done this walk three times I can recommend it as quickly accessible, relatively easy for all age groups, enjoyable refreshing photographic views with the only problem being the difficulty often in getting a park on site.
The car park access is near or actually on the junction of Tanah Street (West) and Jarnahill Drive. (One can park on the roads nearby)
One can take an hour or two to return, depending on ages, health and desire to see and appreciate the many views all the way.
My motto is "If your'e gonna do it (Anything) do it well and thoroughly. One never knows if this might be your only chance to have this experience.

Loved climbing Mt Coolum, I am not fit but managed to get all the way to the top. Beautiful views from up there. Lots of people coming and going, so be mindful of the steep climb and traffic. Well worth the climb!

Well marked, very popular track. Plenty of formed steps made by surrounding rocks. Great panoramic views. Recommend it to everyone, not hard, take your time.

First time doing this on a weekend, car park was packed and a steady stream of people heading up. Pretty easy walk, can ascend in around 15 minutes if you walk at a steady rate. Good view for the level of effort required to walk it, can watch all the planes on approach to Runway 18.

A top walk but make sure you pick a day when it's not blowing a gale as there is not much protection from the elements!

Loved this walk. The view was spectacular. Loved how we could watch the planes take off from Sunny Coast airport.
It is a little rocky closer to the Summit so be careful with younger kids. Does get busy !

Simple walk. My 3 and 5yo both did it easily. If you stand vertical and walk up a couple of flights of stairs then you could climb this. View from the top nice, wouldn’t say spectacular. Good way to wear your kids out.

A popular walk, not too challenging to hike up. It is currently Easter holidays so understandably popular, but still easy to escape the crowds at the top to get a good view point and your all essential ‘I made it’ photos! Incredible views in all directions (though more challenging to get to the western views) make the sweat well worth it. Wish more people would say thanks for you giving way to them...a little courteous behaviour goes a long way.

2/5 stars, 1.5hrs return at a slow pace. A hike that I would do only if I was already in the area. Mostly involves walking up stairs. Basically the same view of the ocean and beach the whole way up. Even at the summit, your view is restricted to the coastline - due to the abundance of foliage at the summit, the inland view is mostly blocked. Because it's very close to populated areas and not too hard, there's a fair number of people on the trail. I'm definitely a mountain > beach person, but tbh I'd rather spend my time at the beach than this hike. I've done this hike 2 times.

EASY
3/5

A hike that I would do once if I was in the area, but probably not again. Mostly walking up stairs. Not fun for the knees. Minus 1 point for the stairs (I do not enjoy stairs).

Basically the same view of the ocean and beach the whole way up. Even at the summit, your view is restricted to the coastline. Due to the abundance of foliage at the summit, the inland view is mostly blocked. Coastline view is also ruined a little in my opinion by the housing scattered up and down the coast. Minus 1 point for lack of variety of scenery in terms of both the track and the surrounding landscape.

Doable for most ages including kids. Good activity for young families I guess? Might be interesting to go again for sunrise or sunset.

Beautifully curated walk with handbuilt stairs most of the way. Popular busy track, exposed at top so bring sunscreen. Fairly steep gradient, good for training.

Museum of Jus on 4 Mar, 2018

Easy walk to the top - stairs the whole way. Took the whole family and they loved the views. Quiet on a cloudy weekday.

This is a fairly short walk about half an hour to 45 mins up, depending on fitness, however it does get the heart racing, especially if your cardio fitness is not up to scratch, so can be a bit of a challenge. Nice view at the top of Coolum beach, but nothing too spectacular.

This was #6 of a 6 peaks in one day challenge I did with my daughter, daughter-in-law, and 12yr old granddaughter so we found it more challenging than if it was our only one for the day. Lots of formed steps and rocky sections with spectacular views of the coast. Highly recommend.

Lone Ranger on 8 Jan, 2018

Great walk with stunning views. Some steep sections but saw a two year old manage it so open to everyone.

Chantelle on 8 Jan, 2018

A nice short walk, lots of steps with a nice view to complete it and spend some time on top or do the walk multiple times for a work out

Adam on Jan, 2018

Nice view but I found it too busy & the stairs really hard on my knees

Simone Burridge on 2018

Relatively easy with some decent incline, good views from the peak of the ocean.

Brad on 2018

Very popular walk. I will be taking extra water next time as it is quite exposed to the elements as you near the top of the climb. The view is well worth the climb!!
