Mt Cooroora

Sunshine Coast

Become your own 'King of the Mountain'.
Mt Cooroora at 446m (Tuchekoi National Park), is probably the most famous of the Sunshine Coast climbs, due to the King of the Mountain race held annually in July since 1979. The fact that it is a race from the pub in town, and the best time is 22:43, gives you the false impression that this might be quite an easy climb, but you would be wrong!
Take time out as you climb to enjoy the stunning views south across the Sunshine Coast and the 360° vista from the top.

Mount Cooroora

Route/Trail notes:

Follow the well worn track up through a wooded area, before a short descent and across a creek bridge. Easy!

Now the hard part as you start to climb along the path and up a series of concrete, rock chiselled and metal stairways. Watch your step, as in places the ground has been eroded.

About halfway up is a side trail with good views and a resting point. From here continue up three more sets of stairs and follow the chains. About 30m from the summit the chain ends and it is a scramble to the top. When the path levels out turn right and follow the track to the rocks at the true summit and fantastic views.

To return, just retrace your steps. It is recommended to 'abseil' the chains going down.

I am on a health kick and fitness kick, and in the past 6-7 weeks lost over 9KG, so I was PUMPED for this one. I have hiked a few places, but this one started off reasonably, then got a nice gradient on it and really felt it in my legs. Then when I saw the steps up I thought it cant be all that bad. Well I was wrong, it was amazingly hard on my legs, I did however have a 6KG backpack on me (my idea of thinking more weight on my back the better it will be for wieght loss as I will be working harder, and work harder I did!.... I think I managed to half way before I was puffing and panting, but the view was amazing and spurred me on to go further. About 5 more mins and I stopped again, legs were on fire and I was feeling dizzy pushing myself hard, so I chilled out on a rock and soaked up the scenery. I was about to give up around 20-30 meters from the top and some guy said mate, keep it going its worth it.. so I just did it, got that last 30 meters smashed and when I reached the top I was extremely happy and motivated!!. Down was a crazy time, I am not a massive fan of heights, but I was surprisingly ok with it, I just found that my legs seemed to work harder than going up. Anyway, all up a GREAT WALK!! And people that think they may give up on this one, DONT!! its well worth the pain.

A fantastic climb, found it quite hard. Dont understand HOW they can run up and back in 30mins!!!!'the steep part of the track is pretty well in FULL SUN the whole way up, so dont try this in the middle of the day - too hot!

Awesome climb, very happy to have done this walk to the top in 48 minutes, rewarded with a fantastic view, a little slippy in the wet, but very happy with my first climb.

This was a consistent climb. The view at the summit was nice (near 360 degree view). Very achievable climb for beginners, a step up from Mt Coolum.

Made it up to the peak. However, still being scared of heights, the walk took me about 4 hours! A school class & many other walkers were there in the morning too.

My 1st ever attempt at a mountain walk. Unfortunately, being scared of heights I only got up to about 100 M from the peak. The walk still took me about 2 hours!

Did this walk yesterday in the heat of the day. Wow! Pretty much a constant climb involving chains and metal steps. I had a healthy respect for the King of the Mountain participants before going up but man, anyone who can run up and back in less than an hour really deserves a whole lot of cudos.
Fabulous view, enjoyed with some amazing company. A real achievement after a few months being a little sedentary. Has spurred me on to walk more!!

A great walk met some nice other walkers on the way down. Sunrise spectacular with the smoke haze.

A great walk up, very hazy.

Straightforward with well defined steps, though steep and slippy in places. Metal staircases spoil the natural quality of the setting, but the views are well worth the climb.

Went up around lunchtime. Blessed with beautiful views, rolling clouds, broken up rain showers the day of, however lucky for the rock at thye top and me stayed dry! Would of been very do able wet just slower going down.

Agreat walk up the hill bit hot in the afternoon. A breeze at the top and excellent views.

A wet morning to do this walk. A bit slippery.

This is a steep climb needing hands on the way up and bottom's, for some people, on the way down. My 6 year old, who love's to climb, found it a bit scary on the way down as it was a bit slippy on the rocks. Older climbers were tempted to go down before they reached the top. They carried on and were glad they did!! This is just a slight warning for the novice climber. i'd give it a hard rating for beginners but a must climb for everyone. just take your time. about 45mins each way is plenty.

A great walk early in the morning. Excellent views at the top. Lots of people ascending on the descent.
