A great climb of Tasmania's tallest Mountain in the beautiful Tasmanian Alpine region.
The return climb itself takes about 5 hours. For about the first 70%, the trail is a moderate upslope with steel and wooden boardwalks which evolves into a laid stone pathway. The last 30% becomes a fairly steep rock and bolder climb. In dry conditions even walkers of low fitness/experience can make this difficult climb. If its raining or snowing I would suggest novice climbers travel with someone with experience or wait until conditions improve. Getting to the base of this climb is the greatest challenge which is explained bellow.

Getting there

The hardest part of this climb is getting to the starting point at Pelion Gap. Mt Ossa is in the middle of the Cradle Mountain National Park. Pelion Gap (starting point) is located about half way along the "Overlander Track" (about 65 klm walk, total 6-8 days) which is how most walkers acsess the area, however we came in from the Mersey Forrest Rd via the "Lees Paddocks Track" (about 50 klm round trip, 3-4 days). Regardless of how you get to Mt Ossa its a great adventure.

In my humble opinion I found the Lees Paddock track and Pady Hartnett tracks more impressive and enjoyable than the Overlander Track.

Via Overlander track $200. Or $40 for a park pass from a side route (like us).

Comments

Started on 23rd did 11km via Arm river track at the end of Maggs road. Slept at New Pelion Hut. Left at 6am to walk to Pelion gap (stupidly carried 18kg bag which I should have left at NPH ended up leaving it at Pelion Gap) then went to the summit. The sky cleared 10 minutes after leaving the top...such is life lol

A.R.T takes around 4hrs to N.P.H then around 2hrs to P.G then 2hrs to summit so total 8 hrs 1 way or total 40km return. It would have been possible to do this faster without overnight gear but you would have to start early and be fit.
