Mt. Wellington - Zigzag/Icehouse loop (Wellington Park) |

This is a tough walk staring with a 650 metre climb up the face of Wellington then across the boulder field at the top and down the icehouse trail. Anyone who says its easy probably hasn't come back down the icehouse trail, its a continuous trail of head sized boulders and is very tricky to negotiate. If its icy at the top, and it was when we did it, it is rather treacherous as well so make sure you have poles or are used to traversing iced patches or ground. On the zig zag its scary to say the least. Temperature was down around 1°C at the top and we needed our gloves. The whole walk took us just over 4 hours with a few stops for pics and nibbles. We were real chuffed to finish that walk but our legs sure knew it. | ||||

Great walk, no real climbs or long vista views but some nice shady sections with a real "middle kingdom" feeling. |
