A bit cooler after the heatwave but still set off early with the aim of having a look at the first leg of the Great Walk and visiting Cathedral Cave and Boowinda Gorge on the way up. Big Bend is a well-shaded spot for a break but beware the resident pied currawongs who will immediately look for a handout. |

Done as a side trip off a walk to Big Bend and to have a quick look at the first part of the second section of the Great Walk. Amazing gorge that just keeps twisting one turn after another. |

Side trip on the way to Big Bend. Worth all the effort!

Another hot day in the gorge so an early start to walk up to the Art Gallery then do the side tracks to Ward’s Canyon, the Amphitheatre and Moss Garden on the way back. Every one of those side tracks offers something special. In hindsight it might have been better to do the side tracks on the western side early on a hot day before the sun gets too high. |

Done as a side track on the way back from Art Gallery. The brief note on the sign about winding up past a waterfall is an understatement indeed and does not do justice to the King Ferns in the short canyon.

Wow! Barely believe that a side track of just 650 m could open in to this.

So cool when it is 38°C in the gorge. Great rest stop on a hot day but take the insect repellent as the mossies can be savage.

Easy and wheel chair accessable yet still gives an introduction to the geology of the gorge.

A wonderful spot for a swim in Carnarvon Creek to cool off on a 40° day. Even shared the first pool with an old male grey kangaroo. For a better swim go a little further downstream from the first pool then cross over near a belt of river oaks to a much bigger and deeper pool. The picnic tables close to the creek are well-shaded and a coooler place for lunch that many of the camp sites. |

Easy walk up the gorge and rock hopping beyond the formed track marker. Don’t miss the short side track into Warrumbah Gorge - it might only be a couple of hundred metres but leads to a short easy climb up into a spectacular cliff formation. |

Bloody hot out here (Early November 2018 severe heatwave) but the views from the bluff were worth every drop of sweat. Carry enough water and take it easy up the steep climb - if you aren’t as fit as you could be make use of the regular benches. We saw a couple of elderly people who managed the climb with a mix of perserverence and rests Take care coming back down. |

Nice walk with a cuppa at the lookout. Pity about the trail bike rider who obviously doesn’t feel there are enough roads and firebreaks in the state forest.

Bloody wet and we fed plenty of leeches but those ancient brush box trees and the falls on Canungra Creek were worth it. |
