Added this onto the Mt Cordeaux and Bare Rock Hike just to add a few extra k’s on. This is a boring and overgrown track where you have to duck and weave through a number of overgrown/overhanging trees & weeds. There’s plenty of prickly weeds all along the track. It’s an easy track but full of weeds.
Cherry Plain to Burtons Well (Bunya Mountains)
29 Jun, 2020
Easy
6km one-way
2 hrs
We parked the car at Burtons Well and started with Mt Kiangarow first (this only adds 2.2km). This was terrific and we were able to see birds and wallabies on the track. Great views and we were the only ones on the track at 9am! We then walked to Cherry Plain via Ghinghion Lookout, Bottle Tree Bluff and Cherry Plain Lookout. These are all wonderful lookouts and well worth stopping at. Once at Cherry Plain, we walked along the roadway back to Burtons Well (about 2.4km). We found this quite dangerous with some cars not slowing down or veering away from us when passing, despite us walking as far left as possible. All up, an 11km walk in 3 & a bit hours.

We parked the car at Burtons Well and started with Mt Kiangarow first (this only adds 2.2km) on our Cherry Plain circuit. Mt Kiangarow was terrific and we were able to see birds and wallabies on the track. Some really great views while walking up and when we got to the top. We then walked to Cherry Plain via Ghinghion Lookout, Bottle Tree Bluff and Cherry Plain Lookout. All up, an 11km walk in 3 & a bit hours.
Barker Creek Circuit (Bunya Mountains)

We parked at Paradise parking area and set off at about 9am keen to walk the whole circuit. However, a sign indicating maintenance works meant that the entire section between Dandabah, Pine Gorge Lookout and Tim Shea Falls was closed. We ended up walking from Paradise past Paradise Falls, Little Falls, Big Falls then to Barker Creek Lookout and returning on the same track until the Y junction (300 metres in from Paradise parking) then heading to Dandabah and back to Paradise parking area. A total of 11km in just over 3hrs but well worth doubling up here and there. We passed a lot of noisy tourists and screaming kids between Dandabah and Paradise, which was a shame because it is a really beautiful area that you could actually really switch off in. Others might not have the same experience as us when the full circuit opens again. The highlight for us was the views up towards Barker Creek Lookout - just beautiful. Especially when the wildlife started grazing and hopping around.
Westcliff Lookout (Bunya Mountains)

We started this walk from Westcott campground. We walked from Westcott to Paradise car parking area and returned on the same track rather than walking on the road. It ended up being 6.1km and took us just under 2hrs - a very leisurely pace to do some bird spotting and marvel at the beautiful trees. Westcliff Lookout has some impressive views out to the west.

Having set up camp at Westcott Camping Ground, we did this little circuit twice during our time camping. On both occasions, we walked the circuit clockwise. There is abundant birdlife & really beautiful views out to the west of the mountains. It’s an easy walk with some small sections of stepping up rocks but a well defined path.

Started this walk at 9am and finished at about 2.30pm. We stopped and took lots of photos and to watch some birds foraging. This is a really lovely walk - nothing hard but there are some sections of rocks to walk over and often uneven/rocky trails. We walked clockwise (veering left at the first fork in the track after the bitumen section) which was awesome to see all of the waterfalls in this first 8 or so km’s. Lots of switchbacks but even going uphill was easy here. The last 7-8km’s is downhill and a very different landscape full of Antarctic beech trees. The entire walk is stunning and I can’t wait to do it again or make it longer and stay overnight in the area!

I really love this walk! Such a wonderful mix of flora and fauna. I always see a lot of birdlife as well as lace monitors. It’s a fairly easy going track with brilliant views over the valleys into Somerset and Wivenhoe Dams. Make sure you add on the 1km Piccabeen walk at the Carpark when you’ve finished the Somerset Trail. Can’t wait to get back out to do it again.

Such a beautiful walk. Peaceful, lots of wildlife & terrific views. A well defined track with great signage. 13km in total but make sure you add on the Piccabeen Circuit (1km) which is also wonderful.

My 4th time doing the walk. It was absolutely amazing with the rain and the waterfalls all flowing heavily! There’s so much water coming over every waterfall! Make sure you wear some gators to stop the leaches chomping at your ankles...they’re everywhere - even got some on my hands from touching rocks & trees.
Picnic Point to Table Top (Toowoomba)

12km return
4 hrs
Started this walk with a foggy morning at Picnic Point. It took under 2hrs to get the top of Table Top and the same to return. Beautiful and green the entire walk and at some parts, we hiked through metre high grass. There was a fair amount of rock scrambling once negotiating Table Top but it was enjoyable. The difficulty came from the humidity and then the constant hills on the return walk. I wouldn’t do this hike again but would walk the shorter Table Top mountain hike from the carpark at its base (3km return) at the end of South Street.

This is beautiful at any time! My 3rd time and I’ll do it again. Saw heaps of wildlife today - heaps of land mullets (the world’s largest skink) sunning themselves everywhere, a Stephens Banded Snake (dangerously venomous apparently), wonderful birdlife (wompoo fruit dove, eastern spinebill. eastern yellow rosella, plenty of wrens, Australian logrunners, catbirds, rufous fantail, crimson rosella, Brown cuckoo-dove, honeyeaters, eastern yellow robins etc). This is such a wonderful hike with water still trickling over each waterfall. Only saw 2 other people on the track!

A must do when in the area. Amazing views - even when hazy. Terrific birdlife and a bitumen path the whole way.
Purling Brook Falls Circuit (Springbrook National Park)

Started at the Settlement Camp Ground and walked across the very green paddock to the parking area and information hut at the Gwongorella picnic area. There is good signage all the way to Purling Brook circuit. We walked clockwise, stopping at the lookouts and onto Warringa Pool. Still plenty of water for a swim but just trickles coming over Purling Brook Falls. A beautiful location to see some wildlife - lace monitors, big black shiny lizards (land mullets), plenty of birdlife as well. A total of 8.1km return to the campground in 3hrs at an extremely leisurely pace spotting wildlife.
Cape Raoul (East Coast)

Completed this walk today...amazing! An absolute must do when in Tasmania. My GPS had the Cape at 7.5k. So, the return trip ended up at 15km. The hike is relatively easy but does have a few switchbacks & staircases when descending after the initial lookouts. When you get to the Cape, the lookouts are fantastic and we were lucky enough to see seals and two abseilers on the dolerite columns. The plant life is incredible and all of the wildflowers were out really adding to the experience. This is my favourite hike so far on the east coast. On the way back, I also completed the Shipstern Bluff hike which added on another 8km - well worth doing as well.

Completed this walk today after the Cape Raoul hike. Shipstern Bluff added 8km to my hike making the total 23km. Shipstern was great going downhill and I got to the Bluff in about 30mins from the Lookout but going back up nearly wrecked me. It was hot and tough going but I didn’t want to leave the area without going. It’s a beautiful part of the coast and I’m so glad I was able to manage both hikes in one day. All up, 6hrs of hiking for the 23kms. I loved the addition of the seats on the way - some really great designs.

This was an easy and interesting walk around the old Coal Mines site. Not much of the buildings remain but the illustrated signs give you an idea of how the buildings once looked. Some areas have been restored quite well. A wonderful area to explore on a quiet day.

A wonderful walk to just stretch the legs! Wonderful wildlife along the way including wrens, parrots, wattle birds, wallabies etc. While it’s an easy walk along a gravel path, there are several sections with slight inclines and/declines. A great short walk to do while in the area.
Cape Hauy (Tasman National Park)

Did someone say stairs??? As impressive as the cape is, to get there we climbed over 150 flights of stairs. It’s a wonderful part of the world with its cliffs that drop straight down into the ocean along with birdlife and the odd wallaby on the track in front of you. We measured 10.5km and did it in 3.5hrs. It’s a difficult walk because of the steps but anyone with a good level of fitness could do it comfortably. Take walking poles if you have them - makes it so much easier on the poor old knees...especially if you have a plastic and metal one!
Wineglass Bay/Hazards Beach Circuit (Freycinet National Park)

Medium
11.5km return

What a wonderful hike! Starting with a climb up to Wineglass Bay for gorgeous views then a gozillion stairs down to Wineglass beach. Walking through the isthmus was really interesting for the vegetation then reaching Hazard’s Beach was a welcome sight with beautiful views & plenty of ocean breezes. We loved walking along Hazard’s beach but the walk back to the Carpark is long and hot. The loop is a great way to see a variety of flora and fauna but make sure you have snacks, plenty of water and a good hat.
