Franz Josef Glacier is now just 300m above sea level and 12km long, starting its journey in the neve of Mt Tasman, having once stretched as far as 35km out into the Tasman Sea. As a result of its accessibility, it is one of the most widely visited glaciers in the world.

The track leads up the Hooker Valley towards Aoraki/Mount Cook and passes close to Freda's Rock and the Alpine Memorial before coming to the viewing platform of the Mueller Glacier and the first of three swing bridges.
The track ends with an amazing view over the iceberg-speckled Hooker Lake and up to majestic Aoraki/Mount Cook and the Southern Alps.
Listen for the rumbling of avalanches from the distant Mount Sefton and try to spot them before they crash into the Mueller Glacier below.
This walk gently winds its way through sub-alpine grasslands and scrub to the Mueller Glacier moraine wall. The track passes through a landscape that was formed in 1913 when a stream cut through from the glacier to the original Hermitage site, damaging the building. The walk ends at a viewing deck that gives stunning views of Mount Sefton, The Footstool, Hooker Valley, Mueller Glacier Lake and Aoraki/Mount Cook.
The Kepler Track is a 60 km, 3-4 day loop track taking you from the gentle, beech-forested shores of lakes Te Anau and Manapouri to the tussocky alpine tops and grand Mt Luxmore. Your reward for the hill climb is a long section above bushline with marvellous panoramic views of the Kepler Mountains on one side, and lakes, rivers and hanging valleys on the other.
The Kepler Track is an excellent track for you and your family and friends, especially if you love the outdoors, want an adventure with a bit of a physical challenge that is not too hard to get to and has excellent facilities.
This is a Great Walk and offers a high standard of track and very comfortable, serviced huts as well as camping opportunities. During the winter months (May to October) the Kepler Track remains open, but with reduced facilities.
Lake Matheson is one of the most photographed lakes in New Zealand. Its backdrop of the Southern Alps dominated by Mt Cook, provides an outstanding reflection across the waters from View of Views lookout.
Lake Matheson, nestled in ancient Forests, is famous for its stunning mirror reflections of Mt Cook and Mt Tasman, which are the result of leaf matter leaching into the water and turning it a dark brown colour.
