A steep climb up the northwestern ridge of Flinders Peak, passing over several crests giving expansive views north to Brisbane on the way up. As it climbs higher, views expand to include the Fassifern Valley and south west to Lamington plateau.

The final segment descends from Little Flinders across a col and ascends again to Flinders Peak. This is the most rugged section of the track and extra caution is required. Rock scrambling skills and strong boots are essential. Views from the peak can be stunning.

Route/Trail notes

This is a challenging track with rough surfaces, steep inclines, cliff edges, limited signage and no water sources.

Starting from the picnic ground, a wide clear track leads south up the ridge line. After a few hundred metres, the track narrows to an obvious footpad and begins to climb steeply. The track is unformed and the ground is loose in places. After a climb of 10 minutes or so, a group of rocks on the east provide the first good views north and a chance to catch breath. After another short climb, an open wooded grassy ridge affords good views through the trees to Brisbane to the north. Another ascent, with views over the Fassifern, leads to a steep climb up Little Flinders which is progressively more boulder strewn. The track disappears as the ridge flattens out, but there are occasional triangular trail markers leading through the rocks to the peak and views along the Main Range down to Lamington Plateau. Flinders Peak proper can be seen from here, with a descent to a col between the peaks and a steep ascent on the far side (approximately 130 metres elevation gain). Picking your way through the rocks takes care and effort, but although the climb is difficult in parts, there is little exposure.

Views from the Peak can be had in any direction - take the time up here as that's what you came for! You share the summit with a helipad and a UHF transmitter.

Comments

This mountain is a challenge, beautiful views at the summit.
The track is a little overgrown in parts but it's fairly easy to find your way.

Good hike, decided to run back down and got lost for an hour or so. The track is pretty clear just stick to the ridge. No need for maps or anything there's just a few deviating paths if you want to go exploring.

Incredible walk ! My girlfriend and I were a bit afraid of losing the track because of all the comments we read. Requires a good level of fitness, but the view is completely worth it, and because of its difficulty, there are not many people attempting it and we were alone of the top which is always nice. The track was actually not that hard to follow on the way up (follow the orange and white ribbons on the trees and orange arrows on the rocks), but funny enough, we managed to get lost on the way back and ended up wandering in the bush for 30 minutes before finding back the track. Amazing fun !

great walk with great views

Did a full circuit of Flinders peak to summit. Most of the hike is on well defined track but at some point you need to ascend through bush (some difficulty navigating through dense bush. Topo map and GPS trail useful ). Easy enough to find trail down from the summit (keep to the ridge). Cover arms, legs and hands. Hike took longer than anticipated (8 hours) but the group was various and large. Apparently we did about 18km on the day.

Great walk with beautiful views! Although the track is not mark very well. It gets difficult to find the track on the way down but if you stick to the ridge you should be fine.

About a 3 hour round trip. Steady climb all the way, keep to the main ridge. A lot of rock hopping which is fun and great views along the ridge. Yellow markers indicate the way when you get to the large boulder area's. Vegetation is thick with regrowth so take care not to loose trail on way down, stick to ridge. Great views from top. Best local climb closest to the city.

Rewarding walk. Quite steep in places, and the track is not well marked in some areas. 3hr round trip with a short stop at the top to take in the great views.

1 hour 10 mins up, a fair bit longer down as I tried to move a boulder with my kneecap... the boulder won. Surprisingly picturesque and fun, opportunities for climbing if you go a little off track. Will definitely go again!

Awesome walk and view

Done this one loads of times. Its a good short sharp and even with decent rests I can manage it in about 3 hours. Some cool caves to discover if you go off track.

SunJunkie on 11 Apr, 2015

Very steep for the most part, footing is often loose on the steeper sections. Boulder clambering about 500m short of the peak where the track is absent or at best not obvious. No real problem if you stick to the ridge. Final ascent to the peak requires care in parts especially a short scramble through a cleft. Views are rewarding all the way up

Shorts on 19 Oct, 2014

Rewarding views all the way up. Final clamber to the peak requires care

We only got a couple of km up as it became too precarious with the baby on my back. We did make it to a rocky lookout, it promises some beautiful views!
