A steep climb up the northwestern ridge of Flinders Peak, passing over several crests giving expansive views north to Brisbane on the way up. As it climbs higher, views expand to include the Fassifern Valley and south west to Lamington plateau.

The final segment descends from Little Flinders across a col and ascends again to Flinders Peak. This is the most rugged section of the track and extra caution is required. Rock scrambling skills and strong boots are essential. Views from the peak can be stunning.

QTopo: FLINDERS PEAK 9442-24 (1:25,000)

Route/Trail notes

This is a challenging track with rough surfaces, steep inclines, cliff edges, limited signage and no water sources.

Starting from the picnic ground, a wide clear track leads south up the ridge line. After a few hundred metres, the track narrows to an obvious footpad and begins to climb steeply. The track is unformed and the ground is loose in places. After a climb of 10 minutes or so, a group of rocks on the east provide the first good views north and a chance to catch breath. After another short climb, an open wooded grassy ridge affords good views through the trees to Brisbane to the north. Another ascent, with views over the Fassifern, leads to a steep climb up Little Flinders which is progressively more boulder strewn. The track disappears as the ridge flattens out, but there are occasional triangular trail markers leading through the rocks to the peak and views along the Main Range down to Lamington Plateau. Flinders Peak proper can be seen from here, with a descent to a col between the peaks and a steep ascent on the far side (approximately 130 metres elevation gain). Picking your way through the rocks takes care and effort, but although the climb is difficult in parts, there is little exposure.

Views from the Peak can be had in any direction - take the time up here as that's what you came for! You share the summit with a helipad and a UHF transmitter.

I am a little out of condition so this walk was challenging but possible. Took slightly less than 3 and a half hours all up (with some nice breathers and a 20 minute rest at the top). Great views and interesting terrain.

Really enjoyed the walk. a good challenge for those who want to try out rock scrambling.
The track was easy enough to follow. The relatively new orange arrows always keep you heading in the right direction.

Great hike this one - lots of interesting terrain and after the saddle there's one bit that is a pure climb straight up which was the only part where I nearly turned around but I'm glad I didn't as the views from the main peak are stunning.

Great walk. Easy track to follow, bit of rock hopping once you reach the first ridge, and great views up top. Took an 1hr 10 to the top and 45mins down, plus however long you want to spend at the top. Right up there for walks in the region.

I don't believe this should be rated black - The rocks are not exposed at all and the track is very clearly marked the whole way up. Finished the whole hike in under 2 hours while taking photos.. Nice 360 degree views though!

CamronDixon on 20 Aug, 2016

Steep for the duration of the climb, quite exhausting but fine if you take your time.
Left at 5am, got there at 6:30, was up the top at 8am, down by 9:30am.

Cool mix of terrain and scenery, was pretty hot, even in winter! :O Track was clearly marked, no trouble finding our way up and down :)

Nice hike! Great views.

Hi all did his hike last Sunday and absolutely loved it. I did it solo and was concerned with the Chimney on the second peak as I am not so good with heights but made it up and would say it is similar to Tibrogargen but a little less exposed. I also did the second peak return quite quickly with only some short stops for photos and a rest at the second peak and made it back up and back in 2.5 hours. I would strongly suggest allowing 4 hours thought if you don't want to strain and want to enjoy the views. I'm looking forward to doing this again with a group as this hike really had everything! Well worth the effort.

Absolute ripper of a hike! The track was easy enough to follow however when you get into the predominantly rocky areas you do have to pay more attention to where you are going. Was a steep incline from the moment we got onto the track, took us about 2:30, return trip including a number of stops. This was just to the first lookout, we didn't venture any further to the second ridge.

We made a little video of our adventure, feel free to click the link below to check it out!

Beautiful day for a quick hike. Took me 2hr 47 mins to get up to the tower at the top and back down. Apparently some people have taken even less time, but I'm not sure how that could safely be done. I suppose you could get closer to 2 hrs if you ran some of the way. This was my 16th or 17th time on the mountain and the temp. was about 18 degrees, so just right.

Beautiful walk, I thoroughly enjoyed the not so perfectly outlined path! The views were stunning, had a nice view with BNE city in sight. Definitely recommend.

Moonbaby7 on 12 May, 2016

Great hike and the view is amazing - worth the effort. Not sure if going up or going down is harder!

Will do this one again one day!

A nice hike with stunning views. I left early in the morning (6:30am) to complete the walk before it got too hot.

What a scorcher today was! But wouldn't have wanted it any other way! This summit has got to be one of my favourites, amazing views you don't see on many summits. The track is fairly easy to follow, just as everyone said, stick to the main ridge, always look ahead for the track, and you won't get lost going up. Coming down was easy enough, just had to make sure I was on the track just coming down off the summit (people have obviously gone to explore off track and created other little tracks to caves, just take note on the way up). Then after the ridge be careful not to veer to the right, like most of us have done, otherwise you will lose the track. But don't stress if you do, just continue in a north-west direction and you will find the track again within 10mins.
Still can't get over the views!!

Karlie Willmot on 20 Jan, 2016

Excellent hike and well worth the pain and sweat for the views at the top.

Samuel Jones on 10 Jan, 2016

Lost;
I got lost on the way down, but only for 15-20 minutes, I travelled north north west on the last big downward slope and met back up with the track. (I followed the obvious path of other lost hikers).

Time;
I powered up the mountain, took me 1h 20m to get up and 1h 40m to get back down. There were 4 other groups at various points on the track, so pretty busy.

Water;
There is no drinking water at the picnic area as well as the summit, definitely take extra with you.

Good challenge,great views of the city and bay. Pretty over grown tracks, few cuts and scratches. Climbing over the rock ridges was good fun
