A steep climb up the northwestern ridge of Flinders Peak, passing over several crests giving expansive views north to Brisbane on the way up. As it climbs higher, views expand to include the Fassifern Valley and south west to Lamington plateau.

The final segment descends from Little Flinders across a col and ascends again to Flinders Peak. This is the most rugged section of the track and extra caution is required. Rock scrambling skills and strong boots are essential. Views from the peak can be stunning.

Route/Trail notes

This is a challenging track with rough surfaces, steep inclines, cliff edges, limited signage and no water sources.

Starting from the picnic ground, a wide clear track leads south up the ridge line. After a few hundred metres, the track narrows to an obvious footpad and begins to climb steeply. The track is unformed and the ground is loose in places. After a climb of 10 minutes or so, a group of rocks on the east provide the first good views north and a chance to catch breath. After another short climb, an open wooded grassy ridge affords good views through the trees to Brisbane to the north. Another ascent, with views over the Fassifern, leads to a steep climb up Little Flinders which is progressively more boulder strewn. The track disappears as the ridge flattens out, but there are occasional triangular trail markers leading through the rocks to the peak and views along the Main Range down to Lamington Plateau. Flinders Peak proper can be seen from here, with a descent to a col between the peaks and a steep ascent on the far side (approximately 130 metres elevation gain). Picking your way through the rocks takes care and effort, but although the climb is difficult in parts, there is little exposure.

Views from the Peak can be had in any direction - take the time up here as that's what you came for! You share the summit with a helipad and a UHF transmitter.

Quite a strenuous walk. Beginning part of the hike is a bit boring and burns the lungs. Once you get to the rock hopping it’s fantastic.

Rain came in as I was summiting, complete white out. The decent was pretty slippery in the wet as I only had trainers on. Boots would be recommend.

The decent is also pretty hard on the knees.

A bit wet!

This is probably the most fun I've had on a hike to date. It's a pretty strenuous uphill hike for the most part, but the rock hopping across the ridge was a highlight, as was the short climb (it's not hard or exposed, just fun!) Exhausting but worth it and the views are great!

Extremely difficult. Enjoyed the stunning views though.

Great walk with very few flat sections so be prepared for some uphill action. Fantastic 360 views all the way up

Was challenging for someone just starting to hike.... But was beautiful. Would definitely do again 👌

Quite strenuous but very manageable. Took 3.5hrs with plenty of breaks. Good views of the city and surrounds. Definitely recommend!

Great walk. Walked in good weather starting out 7:35am. Took 3hrs return with about a 15min stop at the top. I enjoyed the rock scrambling the most and the views back to Brisbane were amazing. Would recommend this walk. Not very technical at all. Car park filled quickly so good to get there early. Toilets near car park.

Challenging but rewarding views.

Great walk. Loved the ridge. hard on the legs on the way down though. Gotta get fitter!!

Great views from the top. Think it took about 3.5 or so hours. The path is very easy to follow and I went during the week so there weren't many people around.

I have a love hate relationship with Flinders Peak, hate the up up uppity bit at the start, love the scramble across the rocky ridge, love the views from the lookouts along the way, and hate how my knees hurt on the way down. Not for the feint hearted or unfit as it is a challenge but the views are worth it.

Didn't pay this trek and the weather the respect I should have; drank 3 litres before I'd finished and didn't take a hat. Taking my poles next time too. Great trek though. A bit to much rubble for me to run back down though.

A decent hike for the reasonably fit. Physically taxing especially on the knees. As has been said before, this hike is challenging but not technical and safe all the way (despite some intimidating looking parts near the top). Rock hopping along the ridge was the highlight.

Brilliant walk, some tough parts to the top with a small rock climbing segment.
5hrs up and back with a break at the top.

What a way to spend Australia Day. Took a 5 and a 6 year old up. It gets a little steep in some parts but the kids managed it pretty easily. It took us 4 hours return with some stops including a lunch stop. The views are awesome. It is pretty exposed weather wise most of the way up and got pretty hot so take plenty of water and a hat. An awesome family day and well worth it. Garmin showed 7.3km return and 654m elevation.
