A steep climb up the northwestern ridge of Flinders Peak, passing over several crests giving expansive views north to Brisbane on the way up. As it climbs higher, views expand to include the Fassifern Valley and south west to Lamington plateau.

The final segment descends from Little Flinders across a col and ascends again to Flinders Peak. This is the most rugged section of the track and extra caution is required. Rock scrambling skills and strong boots are essential. Views from the peak can be stunning.

QTopo: FLINDERS PEAK 9442-24 (1:25,000)

Route/Trail notes

This is a challenging track with rough surfaces, steep inclines, cliff edges, limited signage and no water sources.

Starting from the picnic ground, a wide clear track leads south up the ridge line. After a few hundred metres, the track narrows to an obvious footpad and begins to climb steeply. The track is unformed and the ground is loose in places. After a climb of 10 minutes or so, a group of rocks on the east provide the first good views north and a chance to catch breath. After another short climb, an open wooded grassy ridge affords good views through the trees to Brisbane to the north. Another ascent, with views over the Fassifern, leads to a steep climb up Little Flinders which is progressively more boulder strewn. The track disappears as the ridge flattens out, but there are occasional triangular trail markers leading through the rocks to the peak and views along the Main Range down to Lamington Plateau. Flinders Peak proper can be seen from here, with a descent to a col between the peaks and a steep ascent on the far side (approximately 130 metres elevation gain). Picking your way through the rocks takes care and effort, but although the climb is difficult in parts, there is little exposure.

Views from the Peak can be had in any direction - take the time up here as that's what you came for! You share the summit with a helipad and a UHF transmitter.

Echoing the statement on weeds overgrowing, it is indeed after the amount of rain, gets annoying after awhile on the constant looking for snakes.
Was tough going only made it up the first lookout.

Great for fitness. Requires constant endurance for the entire hike. The summit is amazing.

Joel Bideganeta on 23 Feb, 2020

This was harder than I anticipated. The first section is dry and a little dull, not much to see for the first 20 mins or so. Then the boulder climbing starts, this was my favourite section, but not a place you can get any speed up, I think that's what I found frustrating about the hike. Plenty of scrambling and beautiful views the higher you get. Ye with little legs, be warned. It took me alot longer than I'd thought, but I'm not particularly fit. Plenty of food and water is a MUST.

4 hours return (my level of fitness is only 5/10)
I wouldn’t suggest doing it in summer - it’s too bloody hot!
I used 3 x 600ml bottles of water and wished I took more.
There were heaps of march/blowflies at the top. Take insect repellant!

Bloody awesome hike. Quite steap and a fair bit of rock hopping/scrambling. Gets the heart pumping. Great views all all the wau up and from the summit.
Please do not attempt this without experience and a hydration pack. If you want to summit minimum 2ltrs water and food is essential. What a great hike!

Always a great hike.

1 hr 20 up and 1 hr 20 down.

Some small trees down over the track approx 2/3 of the way up but nothing you can't manoeuvre around.

3.5/5 stars, 4hrs return at moderate pace. The majority of the trail is uphill on a dirt trail so prepare your quads; some parts in particular are steep dirt which makes walking quite slippery, shoes with good grip really help for these bits, especially when going back downhill. Maybe 15-20% of the trail involves maneuvering over and around rocks - these sections are marked with orange triangle markers, so it isn’t too hard to find the right way. Most of the trail is only partly shaded, so if you’re going on a sunny day then be sure to bring sunscreen and a hat. The peak has a helicopter landing pad, so you’ll know when you’re there (there’s a couple of fake ‘peaks’ along the way). Scenery is alright, on a clear day you can see the city in the distance. The peak has a view in pretty much each main compass direction so take your pick, but the actual walk up isn’t amazing for scenery/interest. Overall a decent hike, given that it’s not as far as most of the other mountains. Try to park right up at the picnic area where the toilets and hut are, and the start of the hike is on the right side of the clearing area. I've done this hike 2 times.

Great hike we loved it! Took our 8yr old up and she did really well, definitely some challenging parts but a lot of fun and stunning views all along the way!

Wonderful adventure, good for the soul.

Fell in love with this mountain. Interesting terrain and lots of fun to climb. Greeted by so many roos and wallabees early in the morning!

Clearly enough defined path to traverse in the dark with headlamp. Overall the hike took about 2:40 with about 15min stop at the top to drink in the view.

Really fun hike and beautiful view- if you cooee off the top it echoes for ages! Recommended if you're relatively fit and have done a couple of bushwalks already, don't be scared off by its difficulty level though, it's not impossible if you're willing to take your time.

Karla on 31 Aug, 2019

Took the boys (7 and 9) up and they loved it. Leave early even in winter as it gets to hot and dry up there.

Juiced Pixels on 25 Aug, 2019

A difficult but worthwhile track! It took us just under 3hrs with 10min for food and photos at the top. Very hot and dusty, and a bit of a slog on the way up, but interesting terrain and gorgeous views. Much easier coming down, though slippery at times in the dust!

Great view and good walk. Took me 3h 30m which includes a 10min break at top. Quite warm and still. Wouldn’t want to be here in summer! Some rock scrambling which wouldn’t be good for anyone with mobility and agility issues.

Wez on 25 Aug, 2019

Challenging walk but lots of fun. The part we found hardest was the loose dusty ground on the way down. It was too easy to slip so we had to take it quite slow. It took us four and a half hours but younger people should be able to do it much quicker.

Ian and Sue on 10 Aug, 2019

It was an interesting walk.Great view, definitely need some effort to get on to the top, but totally worth it. We got there around 7:30am, finished around 10:45am. Stopped twice, had some food on the top.

Natasha on 4 Aug, 2019

Great fun from start to finish. The landscape changes often and offers plenty of opportunities for rock clambering. Spectacular views start early on and continue throughout the hike. The family enjoyed it so much, we returned again later the same month with extended family in tow.

Monstar on 3 Aug, 2019

What a fantastic walk. Took our 9 & 12 yr old who loved it. A hard walk but with such a step walk, the views are impressive from very early. The first 3rd of the walk is nothing special, steep, loose underfoot and dull. Once you get to the rocks it is awesome. The view from the top is breathtaking. Will do it again for sure.
