This walk is part of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, starts and finishes at the railway station. Coominya is a small town but has all services. A large and impressive rail bridge along the track but not accessible, a lower river crossing. The walk passes through farm lands so plenty of gates to open and shut but not a walk to complete in Summer months. The trail is well marked so maps are not required. Lowood is accessible after a turnoff at Fernvale which is situated on the Brisbane Valley Highway. Public amenities and car parking at both ends of the walk. No permits or costs for the walk.
How do you get to the start of the walk?
Which maps cover the area?
From the old Lowood railway station follows the direction of the tracks, crossing Main Street to start the walk. If you'd like some goodies for the walk, I can recommend the Lowood Bakery - yum. The first part of the walk is being revitalised with natives, some very interesting plants, should be beautiful in years to come. Along this first part of the walk I found the most active birdwatching (hence taking sometime to complete the walk); honeyeaters, finches, kites and wrens, a local also said to keep an eye out for the Wedge Tail Eagle, but not our lucky day. Though later along the walk we saw a group of pelicans in flight - quite a sight. The old Clarendon station should be about 3/4kms along, but sadly didn't see the railway sign like the rest of the trail. After about 7kms is Lockyer Creek bridge (this will be impassible after heavy rain), one of the old railway bridges, pretty impressive. I would recommend a stop here under the bridge, very pretty area for a break, but also because the next five kms is virtually a dead straight line, that just seems to get longer the the further you go. This section is very exposed, don't attempt during hot weather. Along the way a farmer recommend the Coominya pub for lunch, got along a bit further and a lady on a horse said the pub was 'awesome'. So after the last five kms we decided we deserved a beer and some lunch and certainly weren't disappointed - definately recommend Bellevue Hotel. The Coominya station itself is in situ and there are quite a few information boards in the area, giving the history of the railway.
None.
How can I find more info? Any guide books?
