Mount Cordeaux (GPX)

Mt Cordeaux forms the Northern side of Cunningham's Gap. The track ends at a platform just below the main peak and is ideal for viewing South, down the length of Main Range National Park. There are also good views of the Moogerah Peaks, Mt Barney and North to the Mistake Mountains.

National Parks signage officially lists this walk as Grade 4 difficulty (most of the track is unsealed, with hazards such as tree roots/rocks, muddy sections and occasional tree-falls across the path). Walkers with a moderate level of fitness should find this a comfortable walk and be able to complete it in under the given timeframe.

Getting there

From Brisbane follow the Cunningham Highway towards Cunningham's Gap. Due to road construction, hikers must park at West Gap picnic area, which is west of the gap! Then walk Box Track to the regular trailhead for Mt Cordeaux. This adds an easy 5 km to the entire hike up to Mt Cordeaux and back.

The track is clearly marked so no map is required, however the Sunmap Cunninghams Gap sheet covers the area.

Further Walks

The Mt Cordeaux track continues on to Bare Rock/Morgan's Walk and is worth the effort if you have the time. Allow 4.5 hours to complete the full track.

This was quite a nice walk. And the views from Mt Cordeaux were great. We stopped at Mt Cordeaux on the way to Bare Rock/Morgan's Walk, which is a highly recommended extension if you have the time to do so.

Nice walk this morning. Car park full at 7am. Was bursting at the seams when I finished at midday. Track good. Couple of trees down but easy to navigate over them. Mostly walking in rainforest with a few sunny parts.

Beautiful walk, defined bush path the whole way. The view at the end is lovely, my husband and I took up some food and a picnic blanket and enjoyed the 360 degree views. Take a jacket as it can get a little cold and foggy up there. Would definitely recommend this walk.

Great walk after the rain. Heaps of waterfalls on the way up. Summit was covered in cloud so no view except cloud. Highlight was walking up close to a Albert's lyrebird

The only walk open in the Main Range national park after the fires. After having done this walk on many occasions, it was distressing to see the amount of damage done by the recent bush fires. The day was overcast with light rain patches. You could see the plants were starting to recover in some areas with spectacular color on the new growth and shoots. Still a pleasant walk to do.

Some areas have been burnt due to the recent fires, wouldn’t recommend this walk at the moment if you are interested in botanising. Some steep edges for those afraid of heights. Great views from the top to enjoy your lunch.

Easy walk with my 9yo. We took our time taking photos and rested at the summit for half an hour. Took us 4hrs. Very pretty. Affected by recent fires but new growth is stunning. Well worth the hike. Views are gorgeous.

Fantastic views, albeit a highly trafficked track.

I highly recommend Bare Rock for a good sunset.

3/5 stars, 2.5hrs return at relaxed pace. A fairly easy walk, the uphill is mostly constant on the way up but not too steep (hence 1.5hrs up, 1hr down). The trail is mostly shaded so heat isn’t a big problem. Most of the trail is through rainforest, this combined with the length being fairly short keeps the trail fairly interesting. The trail is pretty popular and well-defined, although be sure to follow the signs to go to the right trail, as there are a few forks for different trails. Also, make sure the trail you take is on the far right-hand side of the carpark (opposite side to the toilets). Peak of the trail isn’t the true peak of the mountain, and views are restricted by vegetation so you can only see towards Lake Moogerah, which is still decent. Decent walk but I think Mt Mitchell (across the road from the carpark) is the better of the two mountains, as well as both being beaten out by Mt Greville. I wouldn’t mind going again but there’s better hikes out there. I'd probably combine this and try Bare Rock extension next time if I go again. I've done this hike 1 time.

We stopped at the Mt Cordeux lookout on our way back down from Bare Rock and Morgan's Walk. It provides beautiful views out to Moogerah dam and surrounding mountains. The family enjoyed pointing out various peaks in the distance we'd hiked previously.
The majority of the walk is in rainforest. Making it ideal for a summer hike. Some nice downhill slopes on the way back to pick the pace up to a jog for a bit of fun with the kids.

Heading from Brisbane to Warwick through Cunningham's Gap, you will find Mt Mitchell on your left and Mt Cordeaux and Bare Rock on your right. It is about 1.5 hour drive from Brisbane and around an hour from Ipswich 🚗

Mt Cordeaux stands 1,135m above sea level ⛰ It is 6.2km return hike and from here a further 2.8km to Bare Rock 👟

This picturesque hike will take you through some stunning rainforest with moss covered ancient old tree's and boulders 🌳 glorious crow's nests, staghorns and ferns 🌿 Even though I started this hike later in the day, you could still feel the Winter crisp air on your cheeks as the afternoon went on 🌞❄
The sound of bell bird's, lyrebirds, parrots 🦜 frog's 🐸 and the scuffle of wallabies being woken from a late afternoon nap 🦘 can be heard throughout the forest as it starts to wind down for the day. My kind of magic ✨

The view from Mt Cordeaux is quite beautiful with views South down the length of the Main Range National Park, Moogerah Peaks and Mt Barney and North to the Mistake Mountains 🌄

I would highly recommend hiking the further 2.8km from here to Bare Rock 🗻 It is a long 2.8km but well worth it. From on top of Bare Rock you do feel like you are on top of the world 🌏 watching the clouds gently dance over the Great Dividing Range ☁️ soaking up the Winter sunshine 🌞 you can't help but be so very grateful to be alive 🙏

I would not classify this hike as hard but a reasonable level of fitness is needed 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️
The track is well signed and easy to follow ↖️
It took me about 2 hours to hike to Bare Rock with stopping for photo's along the way 📸 and just under an hour and a half to get back down.

Now is the perfect time to start hiking and exploring these glorious mountains of ours and enjoy all that Mother Nature has to offer 💕

Great moderate walk. Slow climb to the top so its not too steap. Great views from the top looking towards Moogerah. The gymea lilies were starting to flower, would look amazing in spring in full bloom. Best to arrive early. We began walk at 7.30am and only saw 3 other couples on the way. When we arrived back at the carpark it was full and people were having trouble finding parking spaces. If you walk quietly and not yahoo and carry on you may be lucky to encounter a lyerbird like we did. Were able to view quite closely while she was scratching for food. We also heard multiple lyerbird calls throughout the rainforest section. Some cool rock formations to be seen.

Great walk through the rainforest.
Definitely stop at the cave on the way up for a peak, also the hole in the ground lookout which is like a massive forever drop into this cylindrical hole, so cool.
The views from the actual lookout are amazing

One of the most picturesque walks we have done. The views began from almost the first turn and consistently emerge at various points all the way up. We went to bare rock where the outlook is spectacular.

Steep but lovely walk with amazing plant and wildlife. We saw lots of lyrebirds and some of the biggest most stunning giant spear lilys. The view was spectacular.
