Mt Cordeaux forms the Northern side of Cunningham's Gap. The track ends at a platform just below the main peak and is ideal for viewing South, down the length of Main Range National Park. There are also good views of the Moogerah Peaks, Mt Barney and North to the Mistake Mountains.

National Parks signage officially lists this walk as Grade 4 difficulty (most of the track is unsealed, with hazards such as tree roots/rocks, muddy sections and occasional tree-falls across the path). Walkers with a moderate level of fitness should find this a comfortable walk and be able to complete it in under the given timeframe.

Getting there

From Brisbane follow the Cunningham Highway towards Cunningham's Gap. Due to road construction, hikers must park at West Gap picnic area, which is west of the gap! Then walk Box Track to the regular trailhead for Mt Cordeaux. This adds an easy 5 km to the entire hike up to Mt Cordeaux and back.

Maps

The track is clearly marked so no map is required, however the Sunmap Cunninghams Gap sheet covers the area.

Further Walks

The Mt Cordeaux track continues on to Bare Rock/Morgan's Walk and is worth the effort if you have the time. Allow 4.5 hours to complete the full track.

Comments

This was a really nice walk. Very picturesque particularly near the lookout. We did this walk on our way to bald rock.

Quick and easy with nice views. With a very gentle incline all the way up, I would lean toward an easy rating on this hike as opposed to medium as it is categorised. We were up and down with a snack break at the peak in under an hour and three quarters.

Great walk, weather was perfect, can get crowded on public holiday weekends (even a drone unfortunately). I have done this at least 4 times over the years, this is my most recent hit out on the track.

Nice rainforest walk and took just over an hour to get to the top with a gentle pace. Went to Bare Rock and extended this hike to ~13kms return.

My husband and I and our kids (7 and 9) hiked up Mount Cordeaux yesterday afternoon. It was an absolutely amazing walk with incredible views! Well worth the hike.
The majority of the track is through the rainforest, an easy track to follow with a gentle upward gradient and steps every now and then. Nothing too difficult or strenuous, other than the distance.
It took us around 1.5 hours up (with quite a few rest breaks for the kids), and around an hour back. Saw a few snakes, a massive earthworm as thick as my fingers, and picked up a leech on the way back (icky!!).
Lovely walk, I would definitely recommend it and I hope to be able to do it again soon.

Really nice walk. Did it for sunrise and got to the lookouts after about 55 minutes. First vantage spot has nothing on the actual sign posted lookout about 100m further up. There's also another great lookout spot about 5 minutes further along the main track that would have excellent eastern sunrise views too. Did the walk on a clear April Friday morning. Perfect temperature for walking but chilly at the top when the wind blows so bring a jacket. Only saw one other person as we were coming back down later that morning.
Can recommend the extra hike to bare rock if looking to extend on from Mt Cordeaux, great views there too!

Amazing views and easy track to follow! Continued on to Bare Rock and this was so worth it. Beautiful colours on the rock formations and the stunning green ferns make this hike so interesting!

Soo Awesome!

Get there early if you're going in summer. Saw a python, goanna and some wallabies. Lots of birds too.

One of my favourites. The rainforest is amazing. Did this hike including bald rock with my 5 year old. It took us 5 hours return including a few stops and lunch at the top. Saw heaps of wildlife including snakes, goanas and skinks. You won't be disappointed with this one. The track is pretty straightforward and doesn't get too difficult.

Cityofangels on 10 Jan, 2019

Nice easy hike through lush rainforest which keeps it nice and cool. Only the upper section of the walk was exposed to the full sun. Quite an easy hike up and back. Done in 2.5hours but we weren't rushing and took our time enjoying the splendid views at the top.

BeckNWood on 6 Jan, 2019

Pretty cool, bit windy, not too hard.
Walked to mount cordeaux and then continued to Bare Rock, Total Trip was 12pm - 330pm back at car

Moderate climb. Well marked stunning views! Make sure you apply insect repellant.

Easy, well maintained track up to the summit. With option to continue onto Bare Rock and Morgans walk. This particular morning the cloud was initially down adding a misty atmosphere - very nice. So the summit was clouded over, but I continued onto Morgans walk - again misty. On the way back, the clouds suddenly parted, so back up to the summit, beautiful views and a great way to start the new year. Plenty of birdlife to see, if you're quiet. The walk up took about an hour. Back down I took my time.

Asked for recommendations of a easy to navigate, well signed walk. This walk ticked all the boxes. It advised to allow 3 hours walking time. Completed it in around 1 1/2 hours.
Nice gradual incline. The rainforest area is beautiful and nice and cool considering the warm weather we are getting.
Breathtaking expansive views at the summit of the mountain. Loved it!

Awesome hike! Only took 1 hour to get to the top.

Michael Richards on 1 Dec, 2018

Generally a fairly easy walk and I was surprised that it wasn’ longer. View from the top wasn’t great due to smoke haze etc. you can’t really get to the top but it would be fairly risky to try really.

Smartywishbone on Oct, 2018

Amazing views and relatively easy going. Loved this walk.

Anthony on 19 Sep, 2018

Great walk.
Beautiful rainforest and scenery.
Nice easy incline that can get the blood pumping.
Well signed. Can do easily on your own.
Definitely make the extra trip to Bare Rock. It’s about an extra 5km round trip.

Pure Wanderlust on 1 Sep, 2018

Left the carpark at 4.15am to catch the most beautiful sunrise at the lookout, truly breathtaking and a hike none of us will ever forget.
