Mt Cordeaux forms the Northern side of Cunningham's Gap. The track ends at a platform just below the main peak and is ideal for viewing South, down the length of Main Range National Park. There are also good views of the Moogerah Peaks, Mt Barney and North to the Mistake Mountains.

National Parks signage officially lists this walk as Grade 4 difficulty (most of the track is unsealed, with hazards such as tree roots/rocks, muddy sections and occasional tree-falls across the path). Walkers with a moderate level of fitness should find this a comfortable walk and be able to complete it in under the given timeframe.

Getting there

From Brisbane follow the Cunningham Highway towards Cunningham's Gap. Due to road construction, hikers must park at West Gap picnic area, which is west of the gap! Then walk Box Track to the regular trailhead for Mt Cordeaux. This adds an easy 5 km to the entire hike up to Mt Cordeaux and back.

Maps

The track is clearly marked so no map is required, however the Sunmap Cunninghams Gap sheet covers the area.

Further Walks

The Mt Cordeaux track continues on to Bare Rock/Morgan's Walk and is worth the effort if you have the time. Allow 4.5 hours to complete the full track.

Great little walk up to the view point then went on to Bare Rock. Well signed/maintained path. Well worth it!

Great walk with awesome views

Great track, well signed. We saw plenty of bird life. There was a cold breeze so I’m glad we took jumpers. Absolutely beautiful views!

Cara on 13 Jul, 2018

Made it only to Morgan’s Lookout (ran out of daylight to get to Bare Rock).
Great views to the east ... would be spectacular to see the sunrise

Fabulous views! Was a lot colder than we expected. Take warm clothes! Steady incline. Had a picnic at lake moogerah after we finished. Completed 6 months pregnant

Definitely the better of the two mountains to climb between Mitchell and Cordeaux. The walk is straight forward like a normal bush walk and wasn't physically challenging, however the view from bare rock and Morgans walk at sunrise made it worth it. Also the walk had less people then Mt Mitchell, and both of these mountains can easily be climbed in a cruisy morning of bush walking.

Very nice winter time walk, was very fresh in the rainforest, but not too cold with long pants & a light jacket on. Definitely would get muggy & uncomfortable to do in the summertime I feel. Really pleasant views & lots of interesting different trees the whole way, but the views at the top were absolutely stunning. took about an hour up & an hour down for this part of the hike, however we went on further to Bare Rock another extra 45 mins up & back & it was so worth the extra km, the view got even better!

Angie Nicole on 23 Jun, 2018

Easy to follow track with a steady but not difficult incline. The
A relatively easy walk with magnificent views!

Awesome day out! Did Mt Cordeaux and Bare Rock in 5 hours including a nice lunch break, lots of photos and goofing around time. We even saw a Lyrebird!

Graemej on 21 Jun, 2018

lovely walk, then onto bare rock.

JosephineC on Jun, 2018

Super easy walk. We took three hours on the nose to complete the Bare Rock walk return. That was at a leisurely pace so those who like to power up hills will do this in no time. Much better views than I was expecting and really glad we had perfect weather. Signage was excellent and the path was really well defined as noted in the description. Great one even if you have little ones.

Very gradual ascent, which was fantastic. Beautiful walk with a few lookouts to stop at on the way to the summit. We continued on to Bare Rock - definitely worth the extra walk if you have time. Quite an easy walk

Gorgeous walk. So much to see and take photos of. Kids loved it (teenagers) as well. Definitely going back to do a sunrise or sunset walk! Easy path to follow with a few really good lookouts on the way to the summit

We loved this hike it had lots of rain Forrest, beautiful scenery its magical with early morning mist views are gorgeous. My kind of hike. Oh and we were happy that there were no leaches that day.

HelenR on 30 Mar, 2018

Beautiful rainforest and spectacular views from the summit. Lots of wallabies and birds around early in the morning.

Jurassic views and fantastic lookouts.

My daughter and I really enjoyed our first time out at Mt. Cordeaux. We spotted many wild birds and even a big old goanna. We signed and well maintained track.

Great walk and AMAZING VIEWS... came across 2 snakes, one a whip snake and the other a Rough Scale which had the path blocked and I needed to find a long stick to remove it as it had us held hostage.. I won't be returning until the cooler weather does as I think it's too remote to chance a highly venomous snake bite!

Completed this walk in the rain on a Monday. It was peaceful as we had the mountain to ourselves (we didn't run into another soul except for the odd leech and marsupial!). Definitely recommend being vigilant for leeches. Found the trail to be well maintained, though slippery in some muddy parts (muddy from the rain) but that's not an issue if you have good shoes (as we did)! Overall, very enjoyable and easy walk. It was a lovely area to walk through and unwind to while listening to the sounds of nature and singing birds.

An easy walk and great views from the top.
