Mt Cordeaux forms the Northern side of Cunningham's Gap. The track ends at a platform just below the main peak and is ideal for viewing South, down the length of Main Range National Park. There are also good views of the Moogerah Peaks, Mt Barney and North to the Mistake Mountains.

National Parks signage officially lists this walk as Grade 4 difficulty (most of the track is unsealed, with hazards such as tree roots/rocks, muddy sections and occasional tree-falls across the path). Walkers with a moderate level of fitness should find this a comfortable walk and be able to complete it in under the given timeframe.

Getting there

From Brisbane follow the Cunningham Highway towards Cunningham's Gap. Due to road construction, hikers must park at West Gap picnic area, which is west of the gap! Then walk Box Track to the regular trailhead for Mt Cordeaux. This adds an easy 5 km to the entire hike up to Mt Cordeaux and back.

Maps

The track is clearly marked so no map is required, however the Sunmap Cunninghams Gap sheet covers the area.

Further Walks

The Mt Cordeaux track continues on to Bare Rock/Morgan's Walk and is worth the effort if you have the time. Allow 4.5 hours to complete the full track.

Wonderful

Nice easy walk up on a well-graded track. The walk begins from the track on the right-hand side of the carpark. Saw some pademelons and there was plenty of birdlife around. The views at the top are absolutely incredible!! Very, very glad I did this one. :)

This is a great walk when done in conjunction with Bare Rock/ Morgan's Walk! The view from the top of Mt Cordeaux is really lovely though not as good as Mt Mitchell. Nice and easy!

Stunning views with an easy ascent.

Loved this walk it was so easy and the view from the top was stunning. Spent 40 mins just taking it all in. Took a total of 3 hours on crutches. Highly recommend it!

Nice walk teaming with life! Spotted 3 lyrebirds and watched them mimic the calls of every other bird around. Lot's of caves and chasms about, presumably from volcanic gas tunnels. A lot of paddy melons also! A good trail running route.

Very cloudy day so the view was pretty much non-existent. Although the sound of Bell birds was awesome.

Great walk and awesome view from bare rock

Part of a combined Bare Rock, Morgans Walk, Mt Mitchell day out.

It was a comfortable walk and not too steep. The track was well defined. We also headed out to Bare Rock and Morgan’s Walk. Great views from the top, although it was a little hazy and cloudy. Our 8 year old came along as well and loved it. Picked up one scrub tick on the way down.

Started the walk at 10am. Walked to Bare Rock and Mt Cordeaux lookout.
Track in good condition, passed 6 others groups during the course of the walk.
View from Bare Rock was terrific, however the horizon was hazy.
Enjoyed lunch sitting on Bare Rock taking in the view and quiet :-)

Temp was good, threatening showers on the return leg but still very comfortable.
Would recommend this walk as it's easy to walk and navigate with great views.

easy walk up through the rainforest, nice late in the afternoon to see the sun light up the surrounding countryside and mountains, and to see the shadow of cordeaux in front of us on the hilly terrain below...

Cloudy until the way back

Did it in the rain with no vehicles in the carpark with every gully, wanna-be-gully & the track itself running a banker . . . no view whatsoever this time at the lookout other than the wind whipping the fog over the ridge. Other highlights brilliant color local Fungi & native slugs.

A wet walk, clouded in.

A great walk. 2nd time to this lookout. 3 degrees at the mineshaft but protected from the wind and magnificant at the top. Track is in good condition and some recent clearing.

John Macdonald on 21 Aug, 2010

Track was all cleared up (after previous comments) including through to Bare Rock (didn't do Morgan's Walk).

View from Bare Rock was MUCH better than I remember, but then last time it was covered in fog so that's probably why. If you make it to Mt Cordeaux it's definitely worth the extra distance to Bare Rock.
