Mt Cordeaux forms the Northern side of Cunningham's Gap. The track ends at a platform just below the main peak and is ideal for viewing South, down the length of Main Range National Park. There are also good views of the Moogerah Peaks, Mt Barney and North to the Mistake Mountains.

National Parks signage officially lists this walk as Grade 4 difficulty (most of the track is unsealed, with hazards such as tree roots/rocks, muddy sections and occasional tree-falls across the path). Walkers with a moderate level of fitness should find this a comfortable walk and be able to complete it in under the given timeframe.

Getting there

From Brisbane follow the Cunningham Highway towards Cunningham's Gap. Due to road construction, hikers must park at West Gap picnic area, which is west of the gap! Then walk Box Track to the regular trailhead for Mt Cordeaux. This adds an easy 5 km to the entire hike up to Mt Cordeaux and back.

Maps

The track is clearly marked so no map is required, however the Sunmap Cunninghams Gap sheet covers the area.

Further Walks

The Mt Cordeaux track continues on to Bare Rock/Morgan's Walk and is worth the effort if you have the time. Allow 4.5 hours to complete the full track.

Comments

Gorgeous views, even though it was very cloudy and raining. We added the walk up to Bare Rock as well which was a nice way to finish the hike.

Nice and easy walk! Some awesome caves halfway and beautiful views of the mountains

A graded walk through rainforest up to the summit of Mt Cordeaux. The traffic noise from Cunninghams Gap is almost a constant hum. I have bad knees and found this track manageable as it is mostly switchbacks.

As an aside, I ended up in hospital four days after the walk on an IV drip due to an infection from a tick bite, so I'd suggest using DEET insect repellant all over, not just in some places (note to self) ;)

This as a great walk, took about 45mins to reach the top. Completely deserted up there too, I spent a while exploring! I found two giant holes in the mountain, one just below the peak that goes straight down and another a little further down the trail that is horizontal. As a geology student it absolutely perplexes me what these things are? Sills? Volcanic intrusions? They're so straight they look like they were drilled tbh! Anyway, amazing view at the top, I would have continued on down the other side but a storm was coming over:/ maybe next time

Planned to do the Mt Mitchell walk but ended up going with the Cordeaux as it had better reviews. Found the walk easy with a slight incline heading to the top look outs.. Weather was warm( went in the middle of the day) and was nice to walk most of the way under the trees. Views from the top 2 look outs are spectacular. Only a 3 hour walk at most but would be challenging if not fit. Worth the view from the top :)

Started nice and early , only to be greeted by some clouds at the top ....oh well...still a good hike / exercise ;-)

One of the easiest ways to view the amazing vistas the Main Range can provide - this time of year the spear lillies are also in full flower and amazing.

Pretty easy walk, not steep or rocky and the trail is very well laid out.

A gradual incline that is not demanding, making it an easy walk with a huge reward at the top. The view is amazing, loved seeing the vegetation growing off the cliff faces and the various rock formations on the way up.

Loved this even more than Mt Mitchell. Felt a bit more steep at a shorter distance but covered it without stops up & down (took about 1hr 35 mins without pics time). Fantastic views and rock formations. A bit muddy here & there. Great for backpack training when not wet. Can't wait to do Bare rock.

Lovely walk with the hubby, not too difficult with great views at the top. My mission, to try walk as many trails as possible by the end of spring 🌱🌿

Great Little walk. 45mins to the summit and maybe a further 30mins to Bare rock. Definitely worth continuing to Bare Rock.Even better views.

Short and very smooth walk to a great summit view!

If you are after an easy walk with absolutely rewarding views this is for you! Quite enjoyable and the flowers on the mountain are about to be in full bloom which adds to the panoramic views. We climbed early afternoon and it was beautiful. We made a little video of our adventure, view via the link below!

A really easy going summit hike with switchbacks. You end on a platform just below the summit and have amazing views of the valley below. Took less than an hour to get to the platform, sat on the rocks and enjoyed the view before heading back down. Can see the highway from the top and the trucks are pretty noisy closer to the beginning of the trail.

Great walk, fairly easy. Took 45 minutes up to the top, then went and did Bare rock (30 mins).

Cloudy and no view but still enjoyable!
