Mt Cooroora

Sunshine Coast

Become your own 'King of the Mountain'.
Mt Cooroora at 446m (Tuchekoi National Park), is probably the most famous of the Sunshine Coast climbs, due to the King of the Mountain race held annually in July since 1979. The fact that it is a race from the pub in town, and the best time is 22:43, gives you the false impression that this might be quite an easy climb, but you would be wrong!
Take time out as you climb to enjoy the stunning views south across the Sunshine Coast and the 360° vista from the top.

Mount Cooroora

Route/Trail notes:

Follow the well worn track up through a wooded area, before a short descent and across a creek bridge. Easy!

Now the hard part as you start to climb along the path and up a series of concrete, rock chiselled and metal stairways. Watch your step, as in places the ground has been eroded.

About halfway up is a side trail with good views and a resting point. From here continue up three more sets of stairs and follow the chains. About 30m from the summit the chain ends and it is a scramble to the top. When the path levels out turn right and follow the track to the rocks at the true summit and fantastic views.

To return, just retrace your steps. It is recommended to 'abseil' the chains going down.

Comments

Prepare to get sweaty and dusty from scrambling up the eastern-orientated side of this mountain. Go early in the morning if you can. There are a couple of different trail options...we took the right trail going up and the right trail going down. Lady on the trail said the one on the left was "shorter but more intense." That's all relative though. My partner and I like to run back down and this was a good mountain for it.
Only issue was the massive infestation of flying ants at the top during this October visit. Again, could probably be avoided with an earlier start.

If you're only of average fitness like me will find this a challenge. Keep going and you will get there!

Fun, short hike and the constant incline keeps the heart rate up! Wiretap views and an easy little scramble at the top.

Challenging walk/climb. My hat off for those that are racing this for the King of the mountain.

One of my favs. Two hours return with a good 20 mins at the top.

Super fun walk. Appreciated the stairs and the chain (chain especially so coming down!)
I would recommend it for people with a moderate + level of fitness.

A fun way to get some exercise. The stairs and chain make it navigable pretty easily - it's just down to your fitness. Views at the top are nice, but not the best on the Sunshine Coast.

Loved this hike! It took about 2 hours but that was with taking in the view from the summit 😄 This was the most rock scrambling I have done and I loved every bit of it 😍 I would say a medium level of fitness is needed. Kids can do this hike but I would not be taking little children as the rock scrambling would be a little challenging for them 😥 Do yourself a favour and stop off to refuel and grab a coffee ☕ in the beautiful little town of Pomona after the awesome climb ⛰ Will definitely be back to do this one again 💕🙏

Don't usually comment on repeat climbs, but this was different. We got my three and half year old granddaughter up and back with no winging!
Pushed her bum up over the steps going up and she abseiled down the chains like a monkey.

This is definitely harder than medium. Scrambling and plenty of stairs. I'd say about 3 hours but i cannot remember exactly now. :D Great fun, just wish it's closer to Bris so i could do it more often.

Easy, fun and straightforward quadkiller.
Its too bad this is so far from my home. I'd be here every weekend...

For two first timers this was a challenge, we stoped to question our lives a few times but pushed through to the top. The chains were a good help but I felt we had to get through 30 scrambles rather than one, haha. We have never hiked before and dont consider ourselves fit so I think this hike can be done by anyone. The walk was fun and enjoyable but very tiring, would do this again/10 and beautiful views.
