A great little intense circuit close to Brisbane. Up the northern and down the southern path is the way to go. Very unstable on the descent, lots of loose rocks and soil. Your legs can recover on the easy stroll along the fire trails back to the car park. Your efforts will be rewarded with panoramic views
Montserrat Lookout and Upper Portals Circuit (Mt Barney National Park) |

The track up to the lookout was overgrown. The grass was waist high so it was difficult to keep to the trail and hard work too. Lots of bush bashing through the undergrowth, worth it though for the view at the top! The downhill was not so overgrown, but again difficult to follow the track towards the end - just follow the sound of the rushing water and you come out on the Upper Portals Track. There were several creek crossings on the route back to the car park. We just waded through boots and all - too many to keep taking boots and socks off. Great walk, worth the effort.
Mt Joyce Summit Walk (South East Queensland) |

We did a very enjoyable shorter circuit to Summit Mount Joyce. Up the Service road, along and up the Ridgeline track to the summit and back down the Grass Tree and Shoreline tracks. Easy to navigate and spectacular views across to Mount Barney and Mount Lindesay. The Service road slowly climbs the ridge and is crossed by several mountain bike tracks. Walk to the very end of the Service road and there is an unmarked trail (not a mountain bike track) on the left which contours around to the path that takes you to the summit. About 12km - About 4 hours including lunch stop

We had the whole track to ourselves and took it in turns in breaking the spider webs with our faces! The first 30 minutes was very overgrown. Some of the rocks and earth from the new road which is being constructed on the left hand side of the track have been pushed on to the path, so we had to climb over these mounds to find the track. Looks like walkers may be using the new road as an alternative route to avoid the overgrown section as it does follow the track for a while. If you keep the border fence on your left the whole way up you can't go wrong. A fabulous day walk that has it all. 5 hours was spot on for us including a 30 minute break. |
