This was our first destination on our 12000K drive from Ipswich to Uluru via Mt Isa, and then down to Port Augusta and then home through NSW. The walk is well signed and easy to follow. We did the walk in reverse. By this I mean we walked straight to the end and then did all of the side trips on the way back to Takaraka camp grounds. We left very early in the morning and arrived back at camp just on sundown. Fabulous walk with very interesting history. Definitely take lots of water and food if you do the walk this way.

The river was dry and the trees were all showing signs of distress from the drought. We were lucky that the day we did this walk it was cool with very few flies. It was good to stretch the legs and take in some of the history of Longreach.

Very steep climb all of the way up. The track is easy to lose when you are looking for the gully and was not marked on the day we went up. We spent about an hour following false trails before we found it. Absolutely awesome 360 views from the top and made the climb well worth doing. We had lunch and sat for an hour taking in the views from the top. Take more care coming down as there are loose rocks and gravel. We did a few whoopsies on our rear ends. Took us just over 6 hours in total.

Great walk and it tested our stamina as we arrived late and wanted to be out by sunset, so had to really maintain a cracking pace. Despite this we still enjoyed the scenery, and had a half hour stop at the turn around point. Towards the end of the return leg, it was threatening to rain and the wind had picked up to well over 40kph. This was scary with falling branches, but was good as it was at our backs helping to push us on even faster.

Our third hike into the area with a young couple from the UK. They had just completed the Patagonia hike in South America, so they were used to the cold. We spent 3 days retracing our previous trip, and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. We had a dusting of snow on the hike in, and had one of our coldest nights ever at Dixon's Kingdom where the overnight temperature dropped to -7. This is still one of my favorite walks.

We decided to do this as a two day walk. We got to car park later than expected and decided to overnight at Rum Jungle which is the in the saddle between the peaks. We left early the next day and went up the East Peak. Awesome 360 views. There were three pairs of Wedge tail Eagles soaring above the peaks and we spent a few hours watching them and taking in the views. We then descended and packed up our gear and walked out. We both picked up a few paralysis ticks on the way that needed removing by a Doctor followed by antibiotics for a week. Despite this we will do the walk again. The walk up took us 6 hours with very heavy packs. We had 6 liters of water each, but still ran out. Luckily we found a clear stream flowing just before the climb up the East peak so after returning to camp to pack up we refilled three bottles each, treated the water and had enough to get us back to the car park.

Second time on this walk. We picked this time of the year as the Scoparia was in full bloom and to say we were "gob smacked" is an understatement. Once we entered through Herods Gate, the whole valley was ablaze with white, yellow, orange, red and brown Scoparia flowers for as far as we could see. We spent the whole day wandering casually through the valley up to Dixon's Kingdom and overnighted in the hut. The next day we climbed Mt Jerusalem to look down on the valley. It is hard to describe the blaze of colors from the flowers with the blue/brown/green colors of the lakes and tarns mixed in. Again, we were speechless. We decided to stay another night, and slowly and reluctantly we walked out the next day. |

A challenging walk, but well worth the effort. The track is very exposed to the weather and not well marked. We lost the track 3 times going in and this cost us an extra 2 hours. We decided to stay an extra day to relax and found that there is a 6km circuit walk that starts on the opposite side of the lake. This walk goes around the lake and then up over Reids Peak and then back to the camp. This required a lot of scrambling and climbing on exposed rock faces (not for the faint hearted), but it gives you a 360 panorama of Lake Rhona and the Denison Ranges. Do not attempt if it is raining or threatening to rain as the rocks are very slippery when wet.

We did this walk as a 3 day/2 night walk. We walked into Lake Adelaide (9.6km) and stayed there overnight. Beautiful sunset over the lake from our camp. The next day we walked to Dixons Kingdom and camped behind the old hut as there were people already in the hut. Walked out the next day through the gates. Fantastic scenery and will be back for sure.

Did this walk from South to North as we were outside of the peak season where you can only go North south. My first multi night trek and completed it in 5 days. Absolutely loved it and would highly recommend it. Encountered snow at the Kioria Hut from an overnight dump. Weather was good except for the last day where we got a white out due to a snow storm as we were descending from Cradle mountain. We had friends who did this walk the normal way and we met at Pelion Hut and swapped car keys. Brilliant!! I will be doing this walk again for sure. |
