Sandstone Overhang - 'The Caves'

Ravensbourne National Park

The Sandstone Overhang is one of the hidden surprises in Ravensbourne National Park. It is reached via the Rainforest and Palm Creek Circuits, at the end of a short side-track. The 'caves' aren't large enough to explore, but there is room for children and adults to sit under the ledge in the shade of the ferns that grow along its rim.

Officially listed as Grade 3/Medium difficulty (includes some steep/natural steps), this track is suitable for walkers with a moderate fitness level.

Getting there

From Toowoomba, head north on the new England Highway, then turn right onto Esk-Hampton Road. Turn right onto National Park Road and park at the Blackbean Day Use Area. The trailhead is behind the picnic area.

Love this walk. Explored a little further past the caves today and found a disused carpark next to a dirt road. Might be a useful shortcut for a future visit (pretty sure it's a dry weather road only).

Completed the buaraba track today and all side tracks. The creek was only just a trickle and the walk back up was hot so would recommend completing the walk earlier in the day. It was a lovely walk and the Gas Beutel lookout is a beautiful place to stop and have a picnic.

A fairly easy walk to the 'caves'. It was a nice spot to sit for morning tea.

Completed this one with the Buaraba Creek Trail, Rainforest & Palm Creek Circuits. Ended up being 8.5km in total. A lovely place to hike & a good track.

The overhang is really cool. There are two, so don't miss the second one.

Nice easy walk, turns out there's a 4WD track that takes you directly to the overhang. Sandstone overhang is quite pretty. Very popular on weekends.

Alice on 7 Jun, 2015

Excellent rain forest habitat, coupled with some massive gum trees with some fallen down across the track.

Shell on 11 Jan, 2015
