A steep climb up the northwestern ridge of Flinders Peak, passing over several crests giving expansive views north to Brisbane on the way up. As it climbs higher, views expand to include the Fassifern Valley and south west to Lamington plateau.

The final segment descends from Little Flinders across a col and ascends again to Flinders Peak. This is the most rugged section of the track and extra caution is required. Rock scrambling skills and strong boots are essential. Views from the peak can be stunning.

Route/Trail notes

This is a challenging track with rough surfaces, steep inclines, cliff edges, limited signage and no water sources.

Starting from the picnic ground, a wide clear track leads south up the ridge line. After a few hundred metres, the track narrows to an obvious footpad and begins to climb steeply. The track is unformed and the ground is loose in places. After a climb of 10 minutes or so, a group of rocks on the east provide the first good views north and a chance to catch breath. After another short climb, an open wooded grassy ridge affords good views through the trees to Brisbane to the north. Another ascent, with views over the Fassifern, leads to a steep climb up Little Flinders which is progressively more boulder strewn. The track disappears as the ridge flattens out, but there are occasional triangular trail markers leading through the rocks to the peak and views along the Main Range down to Lamington Plateau. Flinders Peak proper can be seen from here, with a descent to a col between the peaks and a steep ascent on the far side (approximately 130 metres elevation gain). Picking your way through the rocks takes care and effort, but although the climb is difficult in parts, there is little exposure.

Views from the Peak can be had in any direction - take the time up here as that's what you came for! You share the summit with a helipad and a UHF transmitter.

Hard one. It is great to test your willpower and motivation. You climb one peak and then the second peak with the tower becomes visible from a lookout point and you need to motivate yourself to continue and summit. Going up the track and way up is not difficult to find and navigate. Coming back down you need to pay attention to the route. I got distracted and went the wrong way that led to fabulous caves where a couple were rock climbing. It was a dead end though and I had to track back up and find the right track down to the car park. I lost about 15 minutes but it was worth it as the caves where beautiful and I would not have seen them if I had not got lost. You need to be fit to do this one and it needs good supportive shoes.

3rd time

Take your time to look around at the top. Walk around up near the radio tower and you’ll get a good view of Brisbane city and the coast.

Went up before dawn to watch the sunrise, Route finding is simple, even with a head torch. Well placed reflective markers through the scramble sections at the craggy saddle and gully up to the summit. Best views to the east are just below the peak. About 3 hours up and back, and I'm not super fit.

3.5 hours return blinking steep but fun rock scrabbling.
A lung buster.

Steady first k. Increases gradient but very walkable. Rocky section across ridge. Pay attention when the track takers a sharp left to a scramble up at approx 500M elevation, it is marked with orange triangles but we met two walkers who had missed this and continued downhill with sheer cliffs on their left. They ended up on a 3 hour detour.
Recommend tracker app for any hike. Eg outdoor active.
Great views. Great half day hike. Fit 3 hr return. Average 4 hrs. With youngsters 5 for stops.

We started at the picnic area and moved our way toward the peak we went through this grassy area that was heavily vegetated with grass reaching lengths of 1.8m (my height). After that the climb become rocky going up the first ridge then down then up the second ridge down a bit than a final push to the summit. A bit of scrambling involved but i can confidently say that this is a hike not a rock climb.

Completed!

Slightly challenging only in the sense of the varying terrain, not as much rock climbing per se. Comparatively to other climbs I have done this was quite pleasant.

A fav. I'm old and it's my heart check. Beautiful day. Wallabees in the paddock at the base and a different type on the boulder hop. A tree snake in the car park and clear views from the top. Only irritant was an infernal drone. Took 70 mins up and 45 down. Temp up 28 and 31 down. Please leave your drones and boomboxes at home. Some of us are in nature to enjoy it.

3rd attempt with family - finally made it all the way. 5yo managed solo but she's a confident climber. Took our time on a perfect day - would have struggled mid-summer. Looks drier than ever at the moment but still a magical place IMO

Yikes!!! BOM said it was going to be cloudy and 24deg.. instead it was 32 and sun was harsh. This track is pretty much exposed the entire way so hot hot hot!!!! Its all uphill with lots of rocks to climb over, scrambling and a couple of quite terrifying parts to climb up. (and then back down) Some beautiful places to stop along the way to admire the view. The lookout at the top is worth it but you have to work for it. Go as early as possible to avoid the heat, a hat is a must and plenty of water. We saw so many people walking up wearing jeans and with little or no water and grossly under prepared. I was surprised how many people were asking us as we were coming back down about the distance to the top and the terrain that was ahead of them. Please people, research a little before commencing walks and take appropriate gear/supplies.

Great hike

Kmxfitness on 5 Sep, 2020

First time on this mountain, was tough but enjoyable. The road leading to the hike was a little unexpected - dirt road with some creek crossings.
Didn’t see many of people, but the ones we did were friendly and helpful. Pretty much all uphill with some tricky spots, but really enjoyable.
The decent took some attention as it was very dry and dusty today - quite slippery.
Would recommend a moderate level of fitness for sure.

Scenic walk with steady steep ascent. Rocky path with loose gravel in places. Rock hopping, scrambling and a bit of a rock climb right at the end. Beautiful views. Be sure to bring enough water and something to eat at the summit while you enjoy the view. Can see all the way to Brisbane CBD.

I found the first part of this walk to be dry and unpleasant the scrambling was fun as usual even though it was 35km winds! The ugly weather station and chopper pad at the top was a turn off. Hard on the knees coming back. It took 1hr
40min up and 1hr 20min down I'm not in a hurry to do this again although I'm glad that I experienced it at least once.

Chesspeople on 22 Aug, 2020

Went unprepared but did it anyways, Was very tough, that too in jeans

Praneeth on 12 Aug, 2020

Rewarding but challenging walk, took us 4 hrs total. Care needed on descent as it can be lose underfoot. One small section of tricky scrambling near the top.

Sophie P on 9 Aug, 2020

Best hike near Brisbane. Even doable in rain with experience and good gear!

Harry on 1 Aug, 2020

Took my 8 and 10 year old kids up. It was tough for them but they enjoyed it.
