A steep climb up the northwestern ridge of Flinders Peak, passing over several crests giving expansive views north to Brisbane on the way up. As it climbs higher, views expand to include the Fassifern Valley and south west to Lamington plateau.

The final segment descends from Little Flinders across a col and ascends again to Flinders Peak. This is the most rugged section of the track and extra caution is required. Rock scrambling skills and strong boots are essential. Views from the peak can be stunning.

QTopo: FLINDERS PEAK 9442-24 (1:25,000)

Route/Trail notes

This is a challenging track with rough surfaces, steep inclines, cliff edges, limited signage and no water sources.

Starting from the picnic ground, a wide clear track leads south up the ridge line. After a few hundred metres, the track narrows to an obvious footpad and begins to climb steeply. The track is unformed and the ground is loose in places. After a climb of 10 minutes or so, a group of rocks on the east provide the first good views north and a chance to catch breath. After another short climb, an open wooded grassy ridge affords good views through the trees to Brisbane to the north. Another ascent, with views over the Fassifern, leads to a steep climb up Little Flinders which is progressively more boulder strewn. The track disappears as the ridge flattens out, but there are occasional triangular trail markers leading through the rocks to the peak and views along the Main Range down to Lamington Plateau. Flinders Peak proper can be seen from here, with a descent to a col between the peaks and a steep ascent on the far side (approximately 130 metres elevation gain). Picking your way through the rocks takes care and effort, but although the climb is difficult in parts, there is little exposure.

Views from the Peak can be had in any direction - take the time up here as that's what you came for! You share the summit with a helipad and a UHF transmitter.

Perfect blue skies and a pleasant 23 degrees. Headed off around 10am and the path was pretty clear ahead. Other hikers were friendly and considerate when passing. It was a tough hike, solid ascent with some tricky spots, but really good fun. The view at the top is simply stunning! Snacks and water a must.

Amazing hike. There were beautiful views all the way up (except for when the fog was around). It got quite busy but still a great hike. Would definitely do it again

Great walk with beautiful scenery at the top. Be prepared that it can be very windy and cool at the summit, we didn’t stay there long. Easy to follow track and great views along the way.

Good view
Easy track
No navigation required

Challenging hike but very worthwhile! It was a really interesting hike and beautiful views.

Total climb with lunch break (1 hour) was 4.75 hours. It took us about 2.25 hours up with breaks and then 1.5 hours back down.

There is no access to water so ensure you take enough water to last the hike and have good shows it is pretty slippery .

Really enjoyed this hike. The track is pretty obvious, was quite busy when we were coming back down. We started at 7.20am, took us 3 hrs. Great views from the summit.

I have hiked most of the peaks in SEQ over that last few years but never thought much about this one even thought it is the closest decent peak to home, thinking it would be pretty boring, how wrong I was. I found it to have all the things that make a walk memorable, steep climbs, scrambles, great views and plenty of interesting features. I left the carpark at just before 7am and made it to the summit in just under an hour and a half. After a short stop for a bit of exploring, photos and a handful of trail mix I headed back down, expecting to be back at the car in about an hour. I hadn't walked for long before I realised that I had taken a wrong turn and was about to turn back before spotting the secret caves, so continued on to explore them. After a good look around I started back to find where I had taken a wrong turn, and somehow went even further astray. The way ahead was blocked so rather than backtracking again, decided to bush bash in the hope of picking up the trail again, bad decision, now even further away from where I wanted to be. Next bad decision, just head downhill then skirt around to find the trail further down. I soon ran into impenetrable lantana, so again made another decision, head back up. After some time of slipping and sliding one pace up and sliding two paces down made it to the rock wall and with the trail a hundred metres ahead just climbed straight up. Made it back to the summit again two and a half hours later before heading down again. A great day.

We had hiked this previously and only seen a few people. This time it was packed to the point of being unpleasant - following a conga line back down the mountain! The views are great and it is a steep but straightforward hike with only a brief section of scrambling. The track is extremely well worn so no navigational problems.

Really busy trail.
Easy to navigate to the top.
Took us 3.5hours including snack breaks and lots of photos.

A great hike and beautiful weather. If you're feeling daunted by the difficulty, just remember the uphill climb is only for half the duration (approx. 1.75hrs), the descent is more focused on watching your step with less huffing and puffing. We started at about 9:30am so the trail was busy in parts but people were considerate and gave way where needed. I enjoyed the views leading up to the top just as much as the final gasp at the end.

Very challenging hike, if you're new to hiking, I highly recommend to go with someone/people who are experienced, and have been there before. The views are phenomenal.

Ashley Scott on 24 May, 2020

Toughest hike our little group have done. Great feeling of accomplishment at the top. Definitely bring sufficient water ... I emptied my hydration pack with about 2km to go on the descent. Luckily had a spare water bottle in the car that I was glad to be reunited with!

Very challenging and rewarding track. Made an early start and reached the summit in 1hr 18. Unfortunately on the decent the track started to become quite populated and every second person seemed to be carrying a speaker and donating their music to anyone within 100m of them. Was hugely disappointing, but the hike itself is great.

Last time i tried this climb was in 2016. It took us pretty much all day. Had another go in 2020 and was up and back in about 3.5 hours including a lunch break up the top.

Its a great meaty climb that will really get your heart pumping! The higher up you go, the more challenging it gets and the better the views are!!

The first part of the climb is steep and dusty and is great cardio and a good leg workout, I'd probably say this part would be the most physically strenuous. But then you get to the rocky part and and it gets more mentally challenging. You'll need to pay attention to where you're going as a misstep can be costly. Especially if the rocks are wet and slippery.

Eventually you'll get to a steep rock climb about 2 stories, this will be the most technical part of the climb, but it will only take a few minutes to negotiate this part. From there it's about 15 minutes to the top where you can chill out, have a bite to eat and enjoy the views.

Careful going downhill especially on the steep dirty part as there are roots and loose soil that you could easily lose your footing on.

Good quality closed in shoes are a must! Yet i wouldn't say boots are essential, as i saw quite a number of hikers wearing only runners and they were doing fine. Also make sure you take water with you especially in the hotter months.

Åh! That was one hell of a tiring walk! My wife and I made it up in 1hr 55min and down in 1hr 45min including a 10min fika stop on a scenic spot along the way. Many photo stops along the way. Awesome views all through out the hike. Not too bad vegetation overgrowth, looks like heaps of hikers have been pushing through the past few days and we met plenty of others. Some walking just in shorts and runners, although I would recommend long pants and sturdy boots. We even had gaiters. In parts slippery due to dry soil. Gravelled access road is bumpy but managed alright in our small little car.

Not a long walk but quite challenging. Lots of scrambling up rocks. Great 360 degrees views once you are at the top.

Kazz on 4 May, 2020

My favourite walk so far. A bit difficult, a lot of rocks hopping at the end of the track, but I have seen parents with young kids doing it. Quite well-marked track. Amazing views.

Asha on 3 May, 2020

Great half day hike, trail easy to follow and lots of rock to scramble over. There’s an overgrown part around the middle of the hike, but I didn’t find it too bad.
Amazing views! Can see the Brisbane skyline from halfway up. Some nice lookouts along the way,
Beware as the track is very dusty and slippery- had some near misses on the way down

Annie on 1 May, 2020

Agree with the last couple of comments. The track has become very overgrown in parts. Would not usually be an issue but be prepared to have many spiky burrs stuck on you/ your clothing and get quite itchy!! Turned back half way as it just wasn’t enjoyable any more.

Cfizzle on Apr, 2020

Recent rain has caused a lot of weed growth along the first half of the track. Take care as the trail is harder to see.
