Mt Cordeaux forms the Northern side of Cunningham's Gap. The track ends at a platform just below the main peak and is ideal for viewing South, down the length of Main Range National Park. There are also good views of the Moogerah Peaks, Mt Barney and North to the Mistake Mountains.

National Parks signage officially lists this walk as Grade 4 difficulty (most of the track is unsealed, with hazards such as tree roots/rocks, muddy sections and occasional tree-falls across the path). Walkers with a moderate level of fitness should find this a comfortable walk and be able to complete it in under the given timeframe.

Getting there

From Brisbane follow the Cunningham Highway towards Cunningham's Gap. Due to road construction, hikers must park at West Gap picnic area, which is west of the gap! Then walk Box Track to the regular trailhead for Mt Cordeaux. This adds an easy 5 km to the entire hike up to Mt Cordeaux and back.

Maps

The track is clearly marked so no map is required, however the Sunmap Cunninghams Gap sheet covers the area.

Further Walks

The Mt Cordeaux track continues on to Bare Rock/Morgan's Walk and is worth the effort if you have the time. Allow 4.5 hours to complete the full track.

Comments

So beautiful, one of my favourite hikes so far. The last bit that transitions from deep rainforest to exposed mountain edge is mind blowing! Cruisey walk, bit of exercise but nothing crazy.

Great hike, not too strenuous, 3hrs of walking time, went all the way to Bare Rock, great place for lunch. Views all around.

5 hours including Bare Rock

We did both Mt Cordeaux and Bare Rock. Both had stunning views, well worth doing both peaks in the one walk. The track was quite busy given it was a public holiday. Track etiquette required. Did the track in about 4.5 hrs with a 20-30 minute stop at both peaks.

Moderately easy walk, thought it was going to be much harder. Completed in 2.5 hours up to cordeaux than back down through the rainforest circuit. Bare rock is an extra 3.2km.
Total was 10.5km from carpark up to Mt cordeaux than back through the rainforest.

Great hike great views! We went all the way to bare rock and some parts of the track were overgrown but that was fine.

Nice gentle hike. Get there early and see the sun come up!

Took 2 hours- was constantly walking at a steady pace. Arrived at 1pm and only 2 other cars parked at bottom. Made it to the top in about an hour, stayed for around 15-20 minutes then came back down. Easily identifiable track, overgrown towards the top but still able to walk through. Love seeing the scenery change from rainforest to bush. Only went to the lookout, not bare rock and had an amazing view!

We left really early to walk this summit. We started walking at about 8:20 and got back by 11:00, with 30 mins for a break at the top. It was a really humid and hot day, which made the walk uncomfortable. Most of the walk (except for the final part) takes place in a rainforest, where there are many bugs - so take some bug spray. The final section is much more open and extremely hot - you will get constantly scorched by the sun. You will walk past a series of cliffs that at around 9:30 - 10:00 AM should block the sun - they are a great place to take a break. The views from the summit - well, actually it's not at the very top of the mountain, its like a ledge off the side, are extremely good and you can see all over the fassifern valley to Flinders peak. If you have a drone, its a great place to fly it (I brought mine).

Good walk for summer - shaded for most of the walk. No super-steep sections, and the path is mostly sloping upwards with few steps.

Both views at Mt cordeaux and bare rock are worth the hike.

Walk is through beautiful rainforest. The incline is relately constant but not too strenuous. There are lots of spots to look out along the way.

Louise Hamilton-Gainey on 18 Oct, 2020

Walk took about 5 hours to bare rock with stops and lunch. Path is well maintained and signed. If you have the time , venture onto Bare Rock, outside of the vegetation changes , views are awesome and well worth the walk.

Wander on 15 Oct, 2020

Great track, relatively easy, it took less than an hour to reach the top.

Kamile Pilipaviciute on 29 Sep, 2020

We didn't go to bare rock this time as it was to cold and extremely windy. Still the views were awesome.

Awesome hike, nice easy walk, gradual incline and in shade most of the way

Great walk. 12 km round trip to Mt Cordeaux and Bare Rock from the car park.

We left about 8.15am and returned to the car park about 1.pm (nearly 5 hours) We walked steadily and stopped for a while (About half and hour ) at each of Mt Cordeaux and Bare Rock.

The walk is mostly canopied , so not too exposed to the sun. None of it is a high gradient, it is fairly steady climbing and a well marked path.

Great walk with amazing views from several places along the way. Highly recommend.

beautiful scenery, though quite heavily trafficked.

See also my comments for Bare Rock. An excellent walk. Very scenic with spectacular views. Highly recommend. Easily achievable for a person with moderate fitness. Definitely recommend adding Bare Rock and Morgan’s walk. Both have beautiful views and interesting scenery. Mostly flat out to Bare Rock too.
