Mt Mitchell, one of two peaks on either side of Cunningham's Gap, is a good track walk which provides great views of Main Range, the Moogerah Peaks and through to Mt Barney. There is a wide variety of biome types along the track, including luxuriant rainforest, eucalyptus forest, and montane heath, as well as impressive natural rock formations, making this an incredibly scenic walk.

Getting there

From Brisbane follow the Cunningham Highway towards Cunningham's Gap. At the top of the gap turn right into 'crest' carpark adjoining the highway. The Mt Mitchell track leaves on the opposite side of the road, so take care when crossing! Note that the carpark is rather small, so try to get there early to maximise your chances of securing a spot.

Maps

The track is clearly marked so no map is required, however the Sunmap Cunninghams Gap sheet covers the area.

Relatively easy ascent. 3 hours return with half an hour break at the top. Beautiful views. Very brambly and thorny on the way up - lots of reveg and cobblers pegs after summer fires. Saw brown snake on trail.

Great to see the bush recovering, flowers out everywhere and swarms of butterflies. Very enjoyable casual walk.

If you like weedforests this is a hike for you. The summit has stunning views and really showcases just how precarious Cunningham's Gap truly is...

The weeds are shocking. The southern side of the mountain is very rainforested and the atmosphere here is fresh and rejuvinating whilst the weeds just make you feel sickly, itchy, and are just generally unsightly.

Fantastic walk. Totally loved it and would highly recommend. It has a slight incline most of the way until you get close to the top where there are steps. We saw heaps of birds, particularly close to the top, and that was at midday.

Quite an easy and rather non-strenuous trail to get to the top. Amazing views from the top. Highly recommend!

Beautiful, walked on a foggy day, one side of the mountain full of fog, the other clear as day, made an interesting contrast. Spotted a Koala in the trees on the way up. Some interesting views and Alice in Wonderland type moments!

3.5/5 stars, 3hrs return at relaxed pace. Quite easy, the increase in elevation is very very gradual making it seem more like a bushwalk than a hike. Gets a little steeper near the top but the steeper sections mostly have stairs to make it easier. Trail is very clearly marked out. Around half of the hike is through rainforest which has a cooling effect and a nice atmosphere. Lots of moss covered rocks and plants makes for a very refreshing section. The other half is not as nice and consists of drier, mostly brown coloured bush. However, this drier half feels a little more open in terms of space and you can catch glimpses of the nearby Mt Cordeaux and Lake Moogerah in the distance. The peak provides almost 180 degree views; towards the east to Lake Moogerah and its surrounding mountains, as well as the winding road leading down from Mt Mitchell, whilst the west view is of the inland. A few short plants populate the peak and are slightly in the way of a full and clear 360 view. I've done this hike 1 time.

Absolutely amazing views and worth every minute. I did the hike with a friend who is still recovering from a very bad car accident a couple of years ago. We did the hike at her pace and did it in 6hrs, which was an absolutely amazing achievement for her. With some encouragement, I got her out further on the cliff, as she was missing the full view back at the rainforest edge and she couldn't have been more proud and rewarded with the views she saw.

What a gorgeous hike! It was cloudy at the top and very very eerie! When the cloud cover lifted it was pretty but honestly it was great even with no view.

Second time I’ve done this hike and it’s still great. Would highly recommend not doing it after leg day at the gym though, had a few little struggles! There’s a few trees down on the track to climb over and some slippery muddy spots in the rainforest section. Otherwise the views at the top were as great as I remembered.
