Mt Mitchell, one of two peaks on either side of Cunningham's Gap, is a good track walk which provides great views of Main Range, the Moogerah Peaks and through to Mt Barney. There is a wide variety of biome types along the track, including luxuriant rainforest, eucalyptus forest, and montane heath, as well as impressive natural rock formations, making this an incredibly scenic walk.

Getting there

From Brisbane follow the Cunningham Highway towards Cunningham's Gap. At the top of the gap turn right into 'crest' carpark adjoining the highway. The Mt Mitchell track leaves on the opposite side of the road, so take care when crossing! Note that the carpark is rather small, so try to get there early to maximise your chances of securing a spot.

Maps

The track is clearly marked so no map is required, however the Sunmap Cunninghams Gap sheet covers the area.

Easy walk. Once again for the region at the summit careful of the ledge.

easy track great views spectacular sunrise walk

Easy, well graded track until the end where it got a bit scary for those of us not good with heights! Amazing views from the top made a great lunch spot. Don’t attempt on a foggy/cloudy day as you won’t see nothing and the rock stairs become very slippery.

Well defined track. Highly recommend. Hardley saw a soul which is good for the soul.

Great Hike! It was similar to Mt Cordeaux in difficulty but perhaps a touch more difficult in the second quarter. And that's mostly because this section was a little steep and there's not much shade coverage. You are in bush for this section not rainforest. But is eases back in rainforest again when you are on the southern side of the mountain. Definitely take lots of water at least 3L on a hot say. Great views at the top. It was a really nice hike with the surrounds and scenery changing regularly.

Clear track, fun and relatively easy. Misty at the top when we hiked and saw a python on the way down. Would go back on a clear day!

Completed this walk for sunrise. It's the second time I've gone up in the dark. This is a really great one to do for sunrise. The track is very easy and if you walk briskly you can get to the top in under 70 mins.

Truly the best place in SE Qld to watch sunrise, and which is also reasonably accessible.

Had a day to kill, so decided to do this walk again having done it over 10 years ago. No one else on the walk despite many cars in the car park. Thoroughly enjoyed the walk and the views from the top.

This was my first bush walk and it was a great one to start with. Steady incline with some challenging areas. Took us 1hr30mins up and 1hr down.

Did this walk in 3 hours with two 5 year olds. Beautiful walk. Very straightforward and awesome views. We had a few stops including a lunch stop at the top. Kids loved it. Adults loved it. Great family walk.

Started at 3.30am to get to the summit for sunrise. Beautiful sections of rainforest, plenty of bird life and rock wallabies along the way up. Some steep stairs along the top sections, sure footing is a must. Views were spectacular in every direction, great to get an overview of the area.

Mate it's an awesome climb! 360 views from the top. It's a pretty easy climb, it only took me one hour to the top and 45 min back down

Lovely walk through the changing landscape of the mountain, saw a koala scampering up a tree, timed it perfectly by reaching the top before the cloud set in to spoil the view.

Great.

great day and views

drewmac on 1 Oct, 2018

Lovely easy and beautiful hike.. recommend for beginners and people who want to take kids ( although under strict supervision as there a few exposed sections up top..nothing to dangerous though) heaps of steps as well and varied plant and bird life.. Went on a rainy day so there were no views at all but on a clear day the views would be amazing...

The carpark was absolutely loaded today, must be all the fathers day hikers?! 🤣 Another nice walk up Mt Mitchell, had a nice cup of coffee, chats and relaxation at the top which took it to 3 and a 1/2 hours today.

Beautiful walk again. Main Range is becoming a favourite! It was a bit more exposed than Mt Cordeaux. I think there has been either a fire or clearing done but it was quite warm even when I started out at 6.30am. Great walk and I was the only one on the track the whole way up. The top part is just amazing! Absolutely stunning views and beautiful scenery at the top! I’m totally doing this one again! There are quite a few stairs which I think would make it a little difficult for anyone with knee problems so keep that in mind.

Great little track. Saw a 1 metre goanna who just wandered onto the track and mozied up the walking track.... He was amazing! Beautiful rocks on the way up, great views.
