Getting there

The track leaves from the end of Cotswold Rd which turns South of Boonah-Rathdowney Rd 2.7km East of Maroon township. The track ends at a small dam about 3.5km from the turnoff.

Maps

The Maroon 1:25000 covers the area.

Route/Trail notes

Follow the open hill just south-west of the dam. A reasonably clear track leads up the hill reasonably quickly (I wouldn't say it's steep, but if you've been doing graded tracks it'll get the heart pumping... ok, it's fairly steep!).

This track leads into a gully with some spectacular cliffs off to the right. If you're into rock climbing this cliff offers some good options. Just search for Ruby of India to get started.

Climb up the gully, taking care not to dislodge rocks down on your fellow hikers. At the top of the gully a track leads through a small area of vegetation before emerging at the base of the main, bald peak. Simply wind your way up this peak to the large cairn at the top and enjoy the views.

There are some trail markers along the way - orange triangles - but you should have reasonable navigation skills to attempt this one.

Comments

Took a larger group this time and while helping the slower ones onto the plateau, found the speedsters tried their luck hiking to the summit. Only found out when I caught up with them that due to poor trail marking they took a very risky route. Newbies note - to head to the summit from the plateau follow the trail, at the first stone outcrop, cross it and renter the bush at the far right - keep traversing right to where the horizon is lowest, only once you've climbed the next outcrop, only then do you turn back to the left and start up to the summit.

Started at 2:30AM and got up there just after 4. Perfect time for star gazing and then sunrise!

After coming back down from the Mountain, we also did the Caves Route! Off track, bushwalking with firetrail and lots of climbing!

This is a great hike, I would recommend it to anyone who is after a physical challenge and amazing views of the scenic rim. I reached the summit in exactly one hour, but I didn't take any breaks and kept up a steady pace (this would be much more difficult in summer). The trip back down took 50 minutes. Next time I'll take a bit longer and enjoy more of the views on the way up.
From Brisbane, the the drive took about 2 hours to arrive at the car park.
The views on top are amazing.

Hot and hard. 4.45 hours including breaks. Not bad for a 65 & 53 year old.

A great hike/scramble, I think the ''Hard'' rating is correct. Took us 4 hours to do the 7km. Perfect weather, chilly start at 8am 2 degrees. Cold breeze on top. Interesting to see other walkers dressed in everything from full Gortex with poles to stubbies and singlets:)

Great walk, steep constant climb rewarded by the 360 degree views at the summit. Definitly worth the effort. Took us 4hrs to complete, which included both peaks. Will be returning for either a sunrise or moon rise walk. I've heard the views are worth it at those times of the day.

We got lost and didn't have anything to navigate with (oops) but found our way. Ended up at a great view after following somebody else's ribbons but I am pretty sure it wasn't where we were meant to be. Be careful, it was quite steep and and you will lose your footing if you're not careful.

Without a doubt the BEST hike in the gold coast hinterland! Absolutely wonderful 360 views from the top. Done this hike 3 times and the track can sometimes be hard to find when you reach the top section! A little bit of a harder section halfway (but thats the best part)

Incredible! Loved every second. Quite a test of fitness from the very beginning. I didn’t find the track to be overly easy to see and I was grateful to have gone on a Saturday when there were some
Other people around.

Took us 3.5 hrs. We thought we may have gone off the track when we started going downhill again after walking uphill for a while, but just follow it along and you get to the peaks. Great views.

A wee gem

This was challenging, you want to be reasonably fit for this one. Lots of scrambling up rocks, but at a steady pace you summit in 2 hours, not a long day but still a hard one. 360° Summit is awesome! Clear winter day would be perfect!

Best views of the whole area, full 360 degree with great views of cunninghams gap, barney and lindesay

Loved this walk. Hard going most of the way. Some nice views on the way up. Unfortunately we didn't get much of a vista at the top as the clouds rolled in. Have to be my favourite walk so far as hard as it was.

This is a proper hike! Very steep at the start, but it works up to spectacular views. Took us only 3 hours

Wasn't sure what to expect initially but thoroughly enjoyed this mountain. It is fairly steep the entire way with some decent rock scrambling as well (similar to Tibrogargan except without the exposure). I took a GPS after reading through the comments and though it could be completed quite easily without one, it was nice to check every now and then to make sure we were on track. Took us about 1hr 45 to summit (fairly casual rate of climb). The view of the summit is obscured until you get to the end of the scrambling section, then it is a gentle hike to the lookout. As people have said earlier, there is a counter intuitive downhill portion of the climb where the track diverts around a sheer cliff, just keep a look out for the arrows to confirm you're heading in the right direction. Loved the view, loved the climb, one of my faves so far. Saw a snake this time, had a good streak going of not seeing any up until now.

Best summit in the district

I wouldn't say it was a walk, more like a hike up a mountain, and certainly requiring a good amount of effort! I found it a challenge but one I would do again. Burning thighs, and heavy breathing, the first part started off with an upward walk climb and it was tough, hot, and I nearly gave up right there! But I was persuaded to get to the first viewpoint, controlled my breathing and continued on and was so glad I did. Ended up going to the top. I went with a guide from Mount Barney lodge (Innes and Rachel and their son Conner) I would highly recommend it if you are not familiar with the Mountain. We saw the sunset and the Easter moon. It was worth it in the end. It took us from 230pm to 9pm to get up and back with dinner and coffee up the top included.

Did this on Easter Sunday with my son lachlan, good hike, got a little of track at times but soon picked up the trail again, was a little challenging but not as hard as Barney.
Great views from the summit.

Have climbed Mt Maroon previously and still consider it to be a great climb. The descent was just as challenging with both of us slipping in loose rocks more than once. We got lost on the way down but soon found the way after 10 minutes. Fantastic viewing from the top. Spotted black-footed Wallabies at the base of the mountain.
