Getting there

The track leaves from the end of Cotswold Rd which turns South of Boonah-Rathdowney Rd 2.7km East of Maroon township. The track ends at a small dam about 3.5km from the turnoff.

Maps

The Maroon 1:25000 covers the area.

Route/Trail notes

Follow the open hill just south-west of the dam. A reasonably clear track leads up the hill reasonably quickly (I wouldn't say it's steep, but if you've been doing graded tracks it'll get the heart pumping... ok, it's fairly steep!).

This track leads into a gully with some spectacular cliffs off to the right. If you're into rock climbing this cliff offers some good options. Just search for Ruby of India to get started.

Climb up the gully, taking care not to dislodge rocks down on your fellow hikers. At the top of the gully a track leads through a small area of vegetation before emerging at the base of the main, bald peak. Simply wind your way up this peak to the large cairn at the top and enjoy the views.

There are some trail markers along the way - orange triangles - but you should have reasonable navigation skills to attempt this one.

Most challenging hike I've done yet! Amazing views though! If you plan on tackling this mountain make sure you take some protein bars!! :-)

I love this mountain! I've completed this walk multiple times now, and it never fails to satisfy. At just under 1000m, Mt Maroon is no Everest, no Barney even, but it is nonetheless a strenuous hike, which is well and truly made worthwhile by the stunning 360 degree views which can be obtained from its summit. The Mt Maroon walk can be enjoyed without necessarily setting an entire day aside, and this hike also serves as a good training prequel for those who are working towards trekking up its higher neighbour, Mt Barney.
Highly recommended!

Wow what a view!! Pretty extreme climb and steep, I would recommend hiking shoes. Was 4.5 return trip. Really loved this mountain :-)

This was my second time on Mount Maroon and I loved it just like the first. Great time to spend half of your day with a solid scramble / hike up & down this beautiful mountain sitting at around 950m high. Gorgeous views.

Anzac day walk up Maroon, few people out today walking and a couple of people out climbing, nice day on top laying in the sun having lunch and great conversations with others who we were sharing the view with.

This was my first Class 5 walk and I had a lot of fun doing. Yes it was fairly steep and steady the entire way up, but at no time was I scared that I was going to fall off a mountain. It was a perfectly safe walk and a person with reasonable fitness should be able to do it without a worry. After climbing up the middle ridge you come to a set of rocks that give you some amazing views south. From here, turn right and you'll see the final trek to the summit of the mountain. You get some glorious views over Mount Barney, Lake Maroon and the surrounding Scenic Rim. An awesome walk that I would love to do again! It took myself and my partner (who was carrying a couple of small injuries) about 2.5 hours to get to the top. It took us about 2 hours to get back to the bottom.

Great walk! Fantastic views! A bit of work to get up there; took us 1hr 30mins to get to the top and 1hr 10mins to get back down.

The best summit in the area. Makes me so happy.

1st climb, was very steep ascent right from the car park.
Took around 3.5hrs and looking over fog/clouds at the top.
Spotted someone's ashes in a crystal decanter at the summit.
A keen climber been layed to rest, this had been removed on our next hike.

This walk has a spectacular view from the top! If you are NOT experienced I would recommend taking someone who has done the walk as the track is slightly ambiguous in a few places. Nothing impossible, though some level of fitness would be required.

It was like a walk in the clouds. Literally. The clouds were that low (or the mountain that high) :) Great scrambling and scenery. Care to be taken towards the top, when you need to head right down the rocks on a narrow path (a little bit of descending) and then up again to the top. Otherwise you get a bit stranded on the rocks. If you do, turn back and look for this path

Great walk, did it in 6 hours with 1 hour lunch at the summit and carrying a filled 65L pack for training. Highly recommend, but not for those with sensitive knees. Best done early in the day :) Watch out for Roo's on the drive in and out!

Down only, after climbing Ruby of India. Steep, easy enough though, with nice views.

Spent the night at Barney Lodge Camp ground, and drove around in the morning, today we are getting my brother to the top, did this a little slower today, so it felt really like a walk in the park after doing it last month..hmm i think my fitness is increasing.....had a fantastic day on top and spent our time eating lunch and taking in the views, met a couple form Byron Bay who are quiet avid walkers, enlightened them on a few other peaks and walks they may like to consider doing for their next adventure in the outdoors.

Great walk with the boys. Climbed main summit for brilliant views of Mt Barney before descending and climbing northern peak and circumnavigating swampy area and returning.

Grumps on 25 Apr, 2014

ascended via Cotswold track today in just under 1hr 30min, it was lunch time so it was a very hot walk, spent 30min on top then descended. as mentioned by others I noticed the new boot sprayer to kill any pathogens or fungi you may carry in...

My bf proposed to me at the summit ;) ~!
