Never really regarded this as a ‘bushwalk’, but as it all but walking distance from home, thought I should check it out after someone recently posted it. And what a surprise. In the hearty of suburbia is this small enclave of wetland magic. Towering tree and palms of all descriptions as well as dense ground level foliage.

A day out at the Botanic Gardens ended with an exhaustive walk to Mt Coot-tha summit lookout on a very warm afternoon. And yes, I got a lift back down!

Amazing. It is 9am and this little out of the way waterhole already had two other visiting parties! Loved working my way across the boulders at the neck to get to the far side.

Small on park, huge on flora. The tallest Piccabeen Palms I have ever seen and add in the three and five hundred year old trees in this enclave was awe inspiring. On leaving, I ended up having to herd seven cows back off the road into a field and shut the gate! Given I was on my own and only my red truck to block their way, it was quite funny. |

Last walk of a 10 day road trip covering 2,300km and completing 98km on 25 walks; climbed 1,200m that took 38h. Eight of the walks are new and have been loaded on this site. Time to get back to some home comforts, as it is pouring with rain here! |

This walk defeated me the first time, when I took the left fork to nowhere! Back the next morning and take the right fork down though to the lake and around to the hide and back. You know you are getting closer to the lake as the crescendo of bird calls gets louder and louder.
Westcliff Lookout (Bunya Mountains) |

Not having been into Bunya Mountains, I did not appreciate how beautiful and extensive this region was. I only had a day in here, so tried to cover as many walks as possible. But the reality is you need to stay in Dandabah Village and explore the area more fully. The morning sun on the shiny Bunya Tree pinnacles is quite a spectacle. |

No time to complete the eastern circuit, so this short walk down to Little Falls gave me a feel for the eastern side of Bunya Mountain. Unfortunately, there was not a lot of water flowing, but after a good down poor, this would be pretty awesome.

Yet another view to the west of Bunya Mountains, but this time a little further north. Only wish I had had time to see what the eastern views were like from Barker, Big Falls and Pine Gorge Lookouts. Next time!

Last walk of the day having covered over 20km on five walks today starting at 8am. No wonder I am feeling tired and looking forward to a well deserved drink and a hot meal. Interesting to hear the dingos howling somewhere on the mountains in the late afternoon.
Riverbank Walkway (Darling Downs South West) |

It is 8am and freezing cold, but I have a big day ahead and I need to tick this one off before heading out through the cotton fields to Dalby. Despite the cold, I thoroughly enjoyed this walk along the banks of the Balonne River, with only the joggers, dog walkers and mist rising off the river to keep me company.

This was supposed to be just a coffee stop on my way down from Roma to St George and I ended up spending a couple of hours, not only doing the Riverwalk, but looking around town at the historic information and sites.

This hidden away lookout was off the grid. I had just driven down through Arcadia Valley from Nuga Nuga National Park and had to keep stopping to admire the view and I came across this unobtrusive lookout that gives you a high vantage point of the outlying area.

Visited here in 2021 on my way out of Carnarvon Gorge. Did not spend too much time there other than walking around the ‘Island’ and enjoying the views across the lake. I read something about the fact the lake is only 160 years old and continually getting larger every time there are floods in the area. In 1865 it was only 1km wide and now about 8km wide.

Last walk of the trip and boy was that 300m climb from the base of the cliff to the top a challenge. By the time you have walked across the top to the lookouts, it is time for a drink, snack, a chat to fellow climbers and enjoy the views south and out across the gorge, before heading back down.
Mickey Creek (Carnarvon National Park) |

Yesterday I was in the Main Gorge, but today is all the side trips. I was told; 'go beyond the maintained track', and they were right, that is where the adventure begins. I managed a further 800m scramble up through the creek, till I was faces by a series of huge boulders that blocked my path. I subsequently found that you can climb under the boulders, but being on my own and nobody else around, it was not a risk I was prepared to take.
Warrumbah Creek (Carnarvon National Park) |

Having tackled Mickey Creek as far as I could go, I worked to see how far up Warrumbah I could get on my own and once again was faced with a set of slippery boulders 2/3m high with no hand holds. I started to build a platform of logs and smaller boulders, but could not risk the final 'leap of faith' to get up. Reckon two fit people could do it by helping each other. |
