Mt Mitchell, one of two peaks on either side of Cunningham's Gap, is a good track walk which provides great views of Main Range, the Moogerah Peaks and through to Mt Barney. There is a wide variety of biome types along the track, including luxuriant rainforest, eucalyptus forest, and montane heath, as well as impressive natural rock formations, making this an incredibly scenic walk.

Getting there

From Brisbane follow the Cunningham Highway towards Cunningham's Gap. At the top of the gap turn right into 'crest' carpark adjoining the highway. The Mt Mitchell track leaves on the opposite side of the road, so take care when crossing! Note that the carpark is rather small, so try to get there early to maximise your chances of securing a spot.

Maps

The track is clearly marked so no map is required, however the Sunmap Cunninghams Gap sheet covers the area.

Started at 5am to catch the blood moon and the sunrise from the summit. Walk was longer than advertised at just under 14km round trip on my GPS. Easy to follow track. Fantastic views, well worth the early morning.

Great walk with beautiful view from the summit

Great walk that meanders around the mountain. Awesome views from the top. Only really steep bit right at the end but otherwise I imagine most people with a decent level of fitness would enjoy this.

Steady walk to the summit with great view of Lake Moogerah, Mt Maroon, Mt Greville, Mt Barney and surrounding mountains around Cunningham Gap.

Really nice walk. While it’s shorter than Mt Cordeux, was more challenging.

Did this one only a day after scrambling up Mt Blaine so my knees are feeling it.

We took our two children for this one (5 and 8) and apart from the constant reminders to avoid the edges (some serious drop offs around the track in parts) they had a good time. The view was great, on this lovely and clear day. We started at 8am and there were only a few other couples and small groups on the mountain but by the time we were walking down at around 10am, there were many others on the way up. We didn't see much wildlife, and I suspect this might be because of how busy the place was. Might try again very early on a weekday to see if I can spot some more things.

we did this mid morning a few days ago (june) and it was delightful, the temperature was perfect as we ascended from the carpark around the west peak, we did see one whip snake that more frightened of us then us of it. we also seen a brushtail possum and its baby. once you head around the well defined track full of typical australian gums to the south side of west peak it gets very 'rainforesty', very moist and cold but beautiful.
you come to a clearing of last ascent with a caution sign about steep drop off, its only 5min from here to reach the summit.
the summit has beautiful views nearly 360 degrees only inhibiting view from the north by the actual summit of mt mitchell
great views of the valley one side, and epic views down into the gap and on to mt barney NP.
its a sheer drop off 90 degrees the entire east face so watch your step.
there is a campsite in the trees at the summit just have to sort yourself through a bit of vine and you can see a little clearing to set up one small tent.
a short but very rewarding climb for the views.

My first "official" walk - loved it!

Great hike! Not hard at all.. amazing views from the top!

Stunning views from the summit & the walk is full of birds, including the lovely sounds of the bell birds. Easy well defined track with a few sections of steps but nothing too difficult. Saw 1 snake that moved too quickly into the undergrowth for positive ID but think it was a rough scale. The stinging nettle is mostly off the path but is certainly there in large patches. Favourite walk of southeast qld so far.

A good walk... great views from the summit. The stone stairs did not agree with my knees but managed ok.

Really nice easy walk. Took me the same amount of time to go up as it did down because it's such a gradual climb to the top. Around 2 hours return with some time at the summit. The track curls around the mountain and you can enjoy some nice scenery along the way. The summit is like a 5 meter wide ledge with a massive drop off on either side. Feel completely safe while you're up there though. Track was very well marked with a big carpark on the other side of the road.

A 2:45 am alarm followed by a 90 min drive to the carpark saw me kick off this hike at 4:30 am armed with a head torch, a liter of water and two musli bars.

After a 90 minute hike startling rock wallabies and dodging spider webs, I was rewarded with a ripper sunrise at 6:01 rising over Moogerah Dam. Nary a leech in sight, and with a light breeze blowing, this was medicine for the soul.

Great walk and the views at the end of it are just amazing. Some really good photo opportunities including a live echidna foraging in the undergrowth at the side of the path. No barriers at the top (and a huge drop), so caution is required if you do take children. Definitely recommend doing this walk if you are in the area.

Its an ok hike more open bush had some steps and not a bad view.

Completed the walk in 2:45 mins total. Fantastic views.

Decided to tackle Mt Mitchell again after a few months off due to surgery and it was well worth it - the views are amazing.
The path has been trimmed back for most of the walk, but the rest desperately needs to be cleared as the weeks and scrub are growing over the path and make it hard to see. There is also a lot of leaf litter which make some areas quite slippery. Once you pass the 'cliff edges' sign, stinging nettle is taking over, so long sleeves/pants are a must. I went through in 3/4's and a tee, but paid the price with quite a few run ins.

Hiked this morning amongst the fog and clouds. Saw many native birds along the way, and despite not being rewarded with a view, saw an interesting phenomenon of the clouds hitting the peak and shooting nearly straight up vertically.

I really enjoyed this short hike, and would like to come back again on a sunny day. I did feed the locals though, specifically the 5 or 6 leeches who made a mess of my feet and consequently my socks.

Great hike!

Fantastic hike! Gorgeous views from the peak.

Courtlynn Powell on 14 Mar, 2018

Hiked it with a 6.5yo kidlet in tow. Took 3 hours return including a 15 min or so lunch break at the top and a couple of other smaller breaks on the way up and down. Quite a few patches of stinging nettles along the trails - several near the top had been recently trimmed but there are a couple of patches lower down that are hanging across the trail that you need to look out for if you are wearing shorts.
Well marked, wide trail. Even the steps at the top aren't that sketchy and so as long as you've got sensible kiddies they should be fine navigating them. Lots of contrasting vegetation - rainforest/eucalypt forest and some small caves/lava tubes in the rock alongisde the trail in a couple of places. Saw a couple of pademelons early on in the rainforest and then a large goanna on the trail on the way back down.
