Mt Mitchell, one of two peaks on either side of Cunningham's Gap, is a good track walk which provides great views of Main Range, the Moogerah Peaks and through to Mt Barney. There is a wide variety of biome types along the track, including luxuriant rainforest, eucalyptus forest, and montane heath, as well as impressive natural rock formations, making this an incredibly scenic walk.

Getting there

From Brisbane follow the Cunningham Highway towards Cunningham's Gap. At the top of the gap turn right into 'crest' carpark adjoining the highway. The Mt Mitchell track leaves on the opposite side of the road, so take care when crossing! Note that the carpark is rather small, so try to get there early to maximise your chances of securing a spot.

Maps

The track is clearly marked so no map is required, however the Sunmap Cunninghams Gap sheet covers the area.

What a great walk! I enjoyed the variety of scenery as you walked around the back of Mt Mitchell

I did this walk with fog and pouring rain. Had my Akubra, decent hiking boots and my Camelbak. Took me 2 hours to climb and only 1 hour to go down. Honestly this is a great walk rain or shine. The changing terrains and beautiful native plants/trees makes the hike itself rewarding for the person. I would easily do this walk again and is worth the drive from the big smoke.

Also if you need to fuel up I would suggest the service station called Fisherpark Truckstop which is only a few kms up the hill. Dirt cheap fuel prices, toilets, diner and brilliant customer service.

DO NOT FORGET THE FOLLOWING:
- Bushmans spray, salt and pocket knife (leaches)
- Towel and dry clothes (if raining)
- Head torch

Well defined track which courses around the mountain to create a slightly uphill gradient. There are some stairs towards the summit, however these are in groups of only 6-7 stairs at a time. Great views from the top!

Great walk. It took us about 1hr 15m to the top and about 45m down. View from the top is spectacular - the last 5-10 minutes of the hike we found were the most challenging due to a number of stairs. But well worth it! Not overly difficult, a good cardio workout!

A great walk, fantastic views!

I really enjoyed this hike. The summit area is really nice - views east, south and west and really cosy and covered in grass trees. Didn’t see any stinging plants either.

Gorgeous 360 views from the summit. Accidentally stood on a snake (type??). Mustn't have hurt it because it didn't bite me!

Sensational views looking down on the Cunningham Highway and Lake Moogerah..

A steady incline right to the top, with varied vegetation types along the way. Completed the ascent in 70 minutes at a moderate pace. Views are astounding.

Great hike with awesome views!

Fun walk, took 2.5hrs with a few decent breaks.
Didn't notice the pic with the warning about stinging nettles until I got home - they're still there. Not too many, but enough that both walkers had a run in with them.

Great views for minimal effort. Only 1 hour to the summit from the crest car park.

Michael on 16 Jul, 2017

The walk is fairly easy and safe, just a gradual incline with no climbing required. The view at the top is spectacular.

Track is well defined. Very narrow summit with sheer drop-off. Breathtaking views

Awesome walk with some amazing views! Pretty steady climb but not too challenging. Even got to see an echidna.
