Mt Mitchell, one of two peaks on either side of Cunningham's Gap, is a good track walk which provides great views of Main Range, the Moogerah Peaks and through to Mt Barney. There is a wide variety of biome types along the track, including luxuriant rainforest, eucalyptus forest, and montane heath, as well as impressive natural rock formations, making this an incredibly scenic walk.

Getting there

From Brisbane follow the Cunningham Highway towards Cunningham's Gap. At the top of the gap turn right into 'crest' carpark adjoining the highway. The Mt Mitchell track leaves on the opposite side of the road, so take care when crossing! Note that the carpark is rather small, so try to get there early to maximise your chances of securing a spot.

Maps

The track is clearly marked so no map is required, however the Sunmap Cunninghams Gap sheet covers the area.

Great walk, relatively cool in summer. Very good views at the top. Careful of the stinging plants, you'll know them when you feel them sting ;) Park in the car park across the road and then make a dash on foot when safe.

Great walk was an awesome treat to find wild raspberries near the top Yummy!

Spontaneous afternoon walk. Relatively, it's quite easy as the track is gently sloped and the path is well formed. It can be quite slippery after rain so be careful, especially when walking down the steps up near the summit. You are rewarded throughout the walk with wonderful views as you make your way around the mountain.

I was caught in a shower on the way up, but it cleared at the top leaving me with wonderful views and a rainbow. There are leeches, so be careful. I got caught by around 5 taking a photo at the top. There is also limited space and sheer cliffs, so be careful, especially when wet.

Loved it, was a great afternoon.

Tried to keep my eyes peeled for the nettle but was inevitably distracted and found each section with my shins. Getting pretty thick near the summit. Still a great walk and that ridge at the top is certainly a memorable lunch spot.

A nice easy trail, with beautiful views at the top.

Mount Mitchell is an excellent climb for walkers of any fitness level. The views from the top are outstanding and well worth it. We managed to complete the walk in 2.5 hours return. It is worth noting that there is a large section of stinging nettles approximately half way along the track, so long pants are recommended. I completed this walk as a part of my Movember challenge and if you are interest check out my video of the walk - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnNg8s2DyqI&t=1s

Enjoyed this walk, although there were lot of stingy nettles. Antihystime when I got home. The falls next I think.

Absolutely loved this walk. Yes it is uphill just about the whole way but nothing significant. Some steps the closer you get to the top with a few quiet uneven so a little extra care needs to be taken. Especially one spot where you have to go up and then down steps with a open view to the magnificent valley below. The views at the top is well worth the efforts. I was fortunate enough to have the top all to myself on this day and I sat there and had a snack, rehydrated and listened to the wind in total peace while soaking in the views.

Loved this track. Great views at the top, with a steady incline all the way up. Would definitely recommend it for anyone with a moderate fitness level.

Highly recommend! The top of Mount Mitchell is something you want to experience and the trail itself is just as stunning. The walk is easy with a long but gradual incline. Total walking time for my partner and I at a casual pace 2 hrs and 50 minutes including photo ops.

a bit muddy for the first couple of Km, a hiking pole could help. Sweet vegetation variety and lovely views at the top. Not a large viewing platform though so smaller groups recommended. Also car parking is limited. Easy to moderate steepness (about 10km hike). Nice for backpack training if not too muddy. Oh and there are stingy plants around the trail! :)

Really beautiful views and not just at the top. The walk was easier than expected and was wonderful how it changed from the feeling of being in a rain forest to dry bush.
I actually got completely confused after reading the 'mount cordeaux' track info on here and thought the mt mitchell track lead to bare rock. I didn't realise till I got home after the walk! however I am so glad I did this walk and easily could have stayed fooled as the top ends on a big rock and the views are breathtaking!

A good relaxing moderate walk. Not too much to see on the way up but the view at the top is fantastic!!!

Really enjoyable walk even in a bit of light rain. Once quickly away from the noise of the national highway traversing the pass you're immersed in various types of dense forest, before a bit of an adrenaline buzz to be enjoyed along the knife edge. Great views - will be back on a sunny day!

GackJibs on 14 Jul, 2016

Amazing views!!! nice easy track, different types of forest, a walk through the gap. perfect. 3 hours return for fit people taking time to enjoy the views.

A beautiful walk on a sunny winter's day! We made it up in 1.5 hours but were much slower on the descent, partly because some of the steps were slippery and the track muddy and partly because of blisters. A brilliant view!
