Getting there

The track leaves from the end of Cotswold Rd which turns South of Boonah-Rathdowney Rd 2.7km East of Maroon township. The track ends at a small dam about 3.5km from the turnoff.

Maps

The Maroon 1:25000 covers the area.

Route/Trail notes

Follow the open hill just south-west of the dam. A reasonably clear track leads up the hill reasonably quickly (I wouldn't say it's steep, but if you've been doing graded tracks it'll get the heart pumping... ok, it's fairly steep!).

This track leads into a gully with some spectacular cliffs off to the right. If you're into rock climbing this cliff offers some good options. Just search for Ruby of India to get started.

Climb up the gully, taking care not to dislodge rocks down on your fellow hikers. At the top of the gully a track leads through a small area of vegetation before emerging at the base of the main, bald peak. Simply wind your way up this peak to the large cairn at the top and enjoy the views.

There are some trail markers along the way - orange triangles - but you should have reasonable navigation skills to attempt this one.

Second time on this walk and found our way to the summit! The first time, we headed left towards a cliff face and tried to climb that. It got too steep too fast and we got injured coming down. This time, we followed directions and went counterintuitively down through the gully before climbing up to the summit. Luckily we met travellers on the way who gave us further direction or we probably would have gotten lost again. Great, fun walk with rock scrambling towards the top.

Awesome views with all the fun of climbing and scrambling

Great hike with HPHG mountain climbers. Left Brissie early and made it to the top by 8.30. Compared to Mt Barney SE Ridge last month - it was about 1/2 as hard, and similarly rewarding. Better range of forest to trek through: flat crater area near the top with a canopy of lush forest, fern gully, crazy wild winds at the 3 small peaks above the crater area. All round a great hike and not too long. Back in Brissie with 1/2 a day to spare.

Great hike this one! I wouldn't be too worried about navigation skills. Although the track is concealed in some areas it isn't like the path isn't obvious. Just take care! Has a few challenging sections but the view is great! Would recommend.

Awsome view from the top and beautiful mountain the hike. Seeing barney from another perspective really is amazing in itself. Will happily do this hike again. Really enjoyed the rock scrambling. Perfect day and weather was had.

Returned here for a third time. Track is getting easier to follow due to higher traffic in the last few years.

This morning we attempted to summit Mt Maroon, unfortunately the road has been damaged from Cyclone Debbie back in March. This has now temporarily made the road a 4wd access only, if you have a 2wd there is a small opening on the side of the road that 2 cars can fit on and walk the rest of the road (maybe 500m) but thats it, there were cars taking the spots already so we had to turn back. Hope you don't drive the 2hrs to this beautiful walk and find out you can't get there or park without being a disruption to the traffic.

Beautiful walk. Took us two and a half hours moving plus a half hour on the top to have a snack.
Its always useful for first timers to know that once you get past the rock scrambling to a flat tree covered area; you turn to the left not the right (the right goes to the peak you see as you are in the car park and climbing, this is not the main peak).

Definitely one of the best walk/climbs we have done. Lots of steep scrambling sections but nothing too steep or exposed.

I read it was easy to lose the trail on the way back down, people it is true & easier than you think bc it's been really dry lately. I tried several routes but had to keep coming back to the section where I could find a marker, the large boulders & overhanging rocks can hide tracks. I was persistent for two hours before having to call Rathdowney Police to ping my location & a very clever Constable led me back to the track. The cliffs are shear & dry leaves and scree makes it very slippery. I'm an experienced hiker but was more than a little scared after taking a few slides. Thankfully I did not need to sleep in the mountain, but was looking like a real possibility, with no one else on the trail that day. I will not go it alone again & dint mind admitting I underestimated the risks. I had 3 litres of water, a portable phone charger, blanket, food & torch & a compass, so was well equipped. Just beware the elusive track, maybe someone could place a few more markers along the way next time you're heading up? QPS did mention they've rescued a number of hikers recently. Oh, sorry: views were amazing!!

Short dirt road into 'carpark'. Wonderful views and great hike. Steep in parts and would recommend a moderate to high level of fitness and 3-4 hours return depending on how fast you ascend - quite exhausting in parts. Steepest part is just after the track veers downhill then up a gully or sorts, good footwear recommended. The scrambling isn't too exposed, but may worry first time scramblers in a couple of bits. Awesome 360 degree views. Track is a little hard to follow in parts - if you get you'll know though, follow the yellow markers on rocks here and there.

Challenging hike. 1st km is a steady climb. Stick furtherest right as you go up. There is then a descent along the Ridge to the gorge. Some orange arrows mark the path. When you hit the gorge to climb I strongly recommend you mark it with something so you don't get lost on way down. I did and was halfway down gorge. Not a fun climb up!

Climbing up the gorge is the hardest part and it's about 500m of this. Once you get up there is an open part. Head right and scramble up to the top. Beautiful views. Took me 1hr 20mins to get to top.

Track can be hard to find at times, if you're inexperienced like myself don't repeat my mistakes and get lost, backtrack as soon as you feel like you've gone off-track and you should be fine.

Great walk/climb to the summit.

I got a bit lost on the saddle as I didn't know which path to follow. You need to go the right and then make a left - there was a large fallen tree blocking the path which put me off so I went the other way and ended up lost for about 10 mins but found my way back through some bush ok.

Once at the top I had the summit to myself and it was a beautiful clear sunny day and the views were spectacular. The summit was covered in butterflies the day I went which I thought was beautiful but unusual until I realised later that day there was a once in 8 years butterfly migration on that weekend which meant they were everywhere in Brisbane.

Highly recommend this walk to experience walkers only.

Challenging track with some scrambling involved along the way. Great views and a fun hike. Have done this one a few times now and takes about 3hrs for a round trip.

This was the 3rd time i hiked Maroon. Worth it every time, great views at the top. Exercised all my muscles to do this every time. Going back down we took a different way with a bit bush bashing. Allow 5 - 6 hours with lunch at the top.

Loved the walk, and amazing views from the top. Ive seen some reviews on here that said the scrambling was very difficult. If you go up the left peak and miss the right turn to the gully the scramble is grade 7-8 easily, and quite difficult, but if you trek back down, you will see a path on the left that leads down into the gully. Follow that and then enjoy the reasonable climb to the summit.
Overall great hike and would recommend it. Leave some extra time at the summit to explore the top of the mountain too just down from the peak.

This is the tourist track and I don't believe is an hard hike at all. Steep in parts with a fun section to get up the gully and a final slab scramble. We took the kids to the summit. There are some fantastic panoramic spots along the way including stunning views of the East Face. I would particularly recommend Ruby of India if you are into rock climbing: a fantastic traditional multipitch up the east face on quality rock and amazing exposure.

Very steep climb all of the way up. The track is easy to lose when you are looking for the gully and was not marked on the day we went up. We spent about an hour following false trails before we found it. Absolutely awesome 360 views from the top and made the climb well worth doing. We had lunch and sat for an hour taking in the views from the top. Take more care coming down as there are loose rocks and gravel. We did a few whoopsies on our rear ends. Took us just over 6 hours in total.
