Hokitika Gorge (South Island NZ) |

Easy |
1.7km return 1 hr |

Unfortunately, we did not see the 'vivid turquoise' waters, as a downpour the previous evening had brought down 'glacier flour' (finely ground rock), turning the waters a milky white colour as they thundered through the narrow gorge.
Treetop Walkway (South Island NZ) |

Visited Hokitika Gorge first thing this morning and this was an obvious lunchtime stop on our way out to Franz Josef Glacier. Great opportunity to get up in the tree tops and with the informative boards all around, we could relate to most of the trees and plants we had seen on our travels, but had not know what they were called.
Sentinel Rock Walk (South Island NZ) |
4 Mar, 2020 |
Easy |
900m return 30 mins |

Our first ever opportunity to see a glacier close up, as Franz Josef is one of the most accessible in the world. This short walk was just a taste of what was to come on this trip.
Franz Josef Glacier Valley Walk (South Island NZ) |
4 Mar, 2020 |
Easy |
2km return 1 hr |
|
Unfortunately we could not get in close and personal with Franz Josef, as the extended track had been wiped out by bad weather and become dangerous. None the less, the spectacle of the glacier and surrounding waterfalls was worth it.

We are in New Zealand for three weeks and had any number of walks pre-sourced, but this was not one of them. A stop for lunch on our way to the West Coast gave us this surprise and a chance to stretch our legs with walk around these wonderful sculptured boulders.

Time to get off the concrete, get my feet wet and sand between my toes, as I pushed through to Dicky Beach. Maybe one day we won't have to skirt around the houses and be able to continue along the back of the dunes?

On ANZAC Day 2016, we completed a Walking Wounded charity walk of 42.2km from Pelican Waters to Cotton Tree along the then Sunshine Coast Coastal Pathway (SCCP). It took us twelve hours (including stops for coffee and lunch) and we had blisters on blisters. So now (2020), is an opportunity to break the walk down into smaller easier achievable sections that everyone can enjoy, including walking along the beaches, a ferry ride and will likely extent beyond Cotton Tree and include new pathways that have been created in the last three years. This is SCCP1, but feeling energetic I carried on today and did section 2 as well! |

Could just be our last walk of the year, but we needed it to get over the 300km for the year.

On ANZAC Day 2016, we did our own Walking Wounded charity walk of 42.2km from Pelican Waters to Cotton Tree along the then Sunshine Coast Coastal Pathway (SCCP). It took us twelve hours (including stops for coffee and lunch) and we had blisters on blisters. So now (2019/20), is an opportunity to break the walk down into smaller easier achievable sections that everyone can enjoy, including walking sections along the beaches and will likely extent beyond Cotton Tree and include new pathways that have been created in the last three years. This section from Caloundra's Bulcock Beach to Moffat Beach (likely to be called Section 3) I have done a number of time, but today, I chartered it correctly and enjoyed taking in the splendid ocean views across to Bribie and Moreton Islands. |

This lovely little walk is just 5km from home and I never realised it till I was hacking around on Sunshine Coast's Adventure website. So glad I did as its heritage and environment were enchanting.

Didn't Winnie-the-Pooh live in Hundred Acre Wood; never saw him. Last walk of the trip and I have clocked up seven new walks and did one twice as it was so magnificent (Bridle Track to Bird Rock), for a total distance of 25km and have seen over 80% of the birds features on the NP app.
Mount Pitt (Norfolk Island) |
6 Nov, 2019 |
Medium |
3.7km return 90 mins |

You can drive to the top of Mount Pitt, but where is the fun in that? Better to take the Old Mountain Track and enjoy your surroundings, the bird life and the numerous WWII remnants. Cloud covered day, so no photo opportunities.
Palm Glen to Mount Pitt (Norfolk Island) |
6 Nov, 2019 |
Medium |
4km return 105 mins |

Having walked to Mount Pitt from the other side in the morning, I took the Palm Glen route up in the afternoon. Unfortunately a thunderstorm blew in whilst on top, so beat the hasty retreat.
Flagstaff Hill (Norfolk Island) |

After a tour around the cemetery, I needed some clear air from the top of the hill and to enjoy Kingston and its surround from a different perspective.

I was so enchanted by this walk, that I did it twice in the week I was on the Island. I just could not get over the beautiful coastal views and spent ages at Bird Rock just watching the ocean and bird life. Even managed to 'call in' a Green Parrot along the Bird Rock Track using the app.

Off-shore this time on an adventure week to Norfolk Island, where this was the first of seven new walks I managed to log. Never one to just do the advertised walks, these were various combinations of named tracks etc. to add extra distance and interest. |
