A nice walk and place for a swim. If you want to save time take the bus to the start, otherwise it's an extra 4km each way. The rock pools are very popular with tourists. Since you are already here I recommend doing the Rainforest Circuit at the same time.

Well managed track. Go a couple days after the rain to see the waterfall across a couple sections of the track. The pools are a nice place for lunch.

A lot of different environments and plenty of bird life. Possibly the best view I've seen from an information centre in QLD. Don't forget to check out the viewing platform on the second level. The boardwalk is good for bird watching. Watch out for mosquitoes, even in winter there were so many.

Nice view near the start of the track. Plenty of interesting plants and birds around. I recommend returning via the same track. The road is a lot quicker but steeper and a bit dangerous due to the traffic and minimal walking space.

An impressive waterfall and probably closest from the center of Katoomba. Good views from the top. The trip down to the bottom is worth it. Looks like a nice place for a swim in summer.
Thirlmere Lakes (New South Wales) |

Decided to visit these lakes as I heard they are slowly draining, possibly due to coal mining in the area :-( Unfortunately the lakes are not visible from the western side of the loop. The views can be accessed from both picnic grounds on the east side. Be on the look out for wombats, plenty of burrows around. There a few unofficial tracks through the reeds (for bird watchers) but these are hard to follow and like an endless maze.

Short but the historic mine site and information signs are very interesting. Once you reach the mine you can continue down the path to reach the base of the waterfall. Good photo opportunities.

Such a magnificent set of falls. Towards the base, before the steel platform looking up you'll see a large column covered in moss with water trickling down. As the light hits the water it looks like sparkling stars. Very magical. It's not as steep as the signage makes it out to be. Well worth the effort though.

Great lookout. Listen for lyrebirds, they nest very close to the track. |
